Can anyone help diagnose start up problems I'm having with our A reg Renault 4 GTL?

The engine starts runs for a second or 2 and then cuts out- this happens whether the choke is in or out, regardless of trying to rev it. I managed to get it started yesterday after 5-10minutes of trying and then had almost no power; it would barely pull away from the kerb side even using full throttle.

Happy to try any suggestions!

My yellow GTL is for sale near York.
It has covered 81500 miles and is perfect mechanically. There is no surface corrosion and the underside is excellent, with some waxoil protection.
The MoT is new and the road tax is paid for one year.
The interior is very good apart from a small tear in the front passenger seat.
During my ownership (3 1/2 years) it has not been used in winter and is stored in a dry garage.
The car is not "concours" but is very attractive and has drawn many admirers at classic car shows in Yorkshire.
Price £3.200 ono. A small number of spares are included.
Email me jmicklethwaite(at)talktalk.net and I will send pictures

decided to remove head anyway, bores look perfect, although i can only see 2...if i'd thought , i would have tried to have all pistons down halfway, to see upper parts of all bores
rocker cover studs were really tight, bent them getting them out
didn't spot the "hidden" water pump bolt until i'd got the hammer on it a few times!

questions....how can i tell whether i've disturbed the liners, as they're so well located?
....do i really need to bolt them down, as the head won't be off for long?

incidentally, bores got water in, as i hadn't drained down enough, but a good powerful hoover out with a pointy attachment gets any crud/water out, if you go round the edge of the piston carefully

also, got heater valve apart...needed to grind off retaining screw (will fit roll pin in place)

now, just got to buy all the gaskets etc, do a head skim etc

A wiki is a collection of web pages that anyone can edit. It might be a better way to collect the information we have on this forum so that people can find it when they need it.
This is an idea I've been pondering for a while, and after talking to Malcolm and Steve in Kent yesterday I've decided to give it a shot.

The new wiki is hosted at http://quatrelle.wikia.com/ and I invite everyone to have a look. I'm slowly adding content at the moment - see the page on shock absorbers to get an idea of how it could look with your help.
Feel free to add your own notes to the pages, or even just paste a link back to the forum topics where the answers to common questions are found.

An R4 owners BX octopus is leaking and has filled its tank up with ink!:o

However another R4 owner has a fantastic, mint BX that has had an oil leak since - well forever. The pump has been replaced and pipework has been "patched up" but now the time has come to change the crucial part.

I have my head in a haynes manual now but all not not clear, they seem to forget to mention it.

I have searched and read up on leaky BX's but i am not clear on what exactly leaks meaning the octopus or its pipe work back to the resevoir. If its pipework surley i can just pull it apart and fit new?

Thankyou in advance michael
