Soot and moisture - Exhaust

I am fiddling with the carb and fiddling with the timing basically because I seem to be getting a lot of black soot and moisture coming out of the exhaust on start up.

It is not too smoky and it seems to idle well, but a good metre line of black is coming out on the garage floor.

What could this be???

Rich mixture on start up, either running on choke or just running rich. Moisture, try giving her a good run and get her up to temperature.
With short/slow runs the moisture builds up in your silencer till it just overflows, but a good hard run will blow and dry it all out.

It does sound like a rich mixture; check your spark plugs as well-if it's too rich they'll also be black with soot

I happened to have a spare carb Zenith 28IF so I stripped it down, sandblasted it and cleaned it out. Replaced the carb and wham, total difference.

I had to advance the timing quite a lot on the original just to get the revs up but this one is working like a dream. Not sure why but I will investigate further now it is out of the car.
