New Old Stock Renault 4 1968

Because it comes from the era when manufacturers thought odd tacked on bits on older clean designs looked good. The same era that also introduced the Renault 4 Safari...... :-)

New Old Stock Renault 4 1968

Nice find! I love all the old cars. From my really dodgy German, it seems they are a mix of NOS cars (some of the Fiats) the others being various low mileage trade-ins in Denmark. It looks like the NOS Fiats, not having been registered before, may be ineligible for registration now because of...

    Suspension Bushes

    Nice! An easy simple solution!

    Suspension Bushes

What you have decided to do is what I found the nastiest job on any Renault I have worked on. It makes changing the starter motor on a 16TS look easy! :-) With the front bushes, try using a rod the same diameter as the inner torsion bar splines. even though it will be bearing on the rubber...

    Webasto Roof

Those sunroof generally look after themselves, they either work by sliding open and folding nicely or they don't. I had a steel frame Weathershields type on my previous Renault 12. The PO had done a lot of work on that roof. The sun made the vinyl go hard and brittle, this let water into the...

    R5 mkI engine identification

Probably old news, but the 847/7/25 was fitted to the Swedish and Swiss R5's, it is an emissionised 8.8:1 compression 1.4 litre motor. Those plugs in the head being blanking plugs for the EGR pipes which would originally have been fitted. The AUS spec Fuego and 20TS's had a similar thing...

    305 Rejane White?

Yeah, I know I'm well behind the times. But I reckon white R4's look good, probably because I've got one. Mine is Alpine White used on the Australian assembled R4's, probably closeish to the Rejane White, although it probably doesn't show up too well in this pic.

    Info on R codes

That oval plate is consistent with the other Australian assembled R2106's I've seen. Assembled in the Heidelberg West factory, apparently they were fitted with 12V electrics for supply to the Australian PMG (Post Master General) who required 12 volts for their test equipment. However I've never...

    fuel pump

It has a lever in the base of the pump that operates off an eccentric on the cam, the lever directly operates the pump diaphragm. The later type ones usually have the base crimped to the top half of the pump, so it can only be replaced and not pulled apart. The earlier types, and there are...

    remove of rocker shaft

No need to grind, chisel, cut or gas-axe anything to get those two bolts out. It is as suggested by Martin. 1) Remove the tappet adjusting screws for the two blocking rockers. 2) Push each rocker to one side against the spring allowing removal of the pushrods. 3) Push the rocker down...

    1963 R4 on Australian Ebay

I've no connection with the car at all, so can't comment on the condition etc.. The patinated appearance is usual for the odd original Australian assembled R4's that turn up for sale :-)...

WTB, R5 Mk 1, RHS headlight.

RHS headlight for RHD R5 Mk 1 wanted. A mate's car had its eye poked out by a stone, and the R5 was never sold in AUS new so parts are thin on the ground. Payment in £.s.d. or exchange any scungy old Renault parts that I may have spare.

    Reversing light or not?

AFAIK, the tail lights on the F4 vans were never fitted with reversing lights or fog lights. The attached pic shows the reversing light arrangement on an Irish F4 van that a mate posted to me. The fog lights always seem to be seperate, usually mounted below the bumper.

    4GTL '4x4' 1.4?

The N/A Alpine motor is 10:1 compression, the Alpine Turbo is 8.6:1, the main difference being that the Turbo motor has low compression pistons. Also the Alpine N/A and Turbo blocks have the cam running in removable camshaft bearings, the “normal” 1.1, 1.3 and 1.4 cams run in the block, so it...

    Renault 8

Sounds like one of the later Spanish built FASA Renault 8S’s. Four headlight front panel with four 5.75” lights. The engine would be basically the same as that on an R4 GTL, but there will be detail differences such as the waterpump (different and located on the opposite end of the cylinder...

Renault 4 in Practical classic feature

One to look out for from my end. But I did like the article in Classic and Sportscar magazine (emphasis on the AND :-)) of the 1964 R4 from the works museum a couple or so years ago.

    I can smell fuel

Is the diaphragm on the carby itself (if it has an accelerator pump)? Or is it the fuel pump diaphragm? On the later fuel pumps where the top and bottom halves are are crimped together, fuel can leak around the crimping when the pump gets old. Replacement of the fuel pump with a new one is the...

    R4 Front Wheel Cylinders

My cars have the early 180mm diameter drum brakes, I found that the brake backing plate has to be removed from the stub axle carrier after the linings and springs are removed. The backplate is held on by four bolts that are semi-awkward to access unless you have a thin 14mm ring spanner, the...

    R4 vs 2CV Drag Racing - Results

Good stuff! I just love the 4 van colour scheme!! I'll have to dig out my results from some 1/8th mile sprints in my 4 from ages ago to compare times with the later 34bhp cars :-)

    4GTL '4x4' 1.4?

Sounds like the start of a Marreau Brother's Paris Dakar R4x4 replica, with an R5 Alpine Group 2 1.4 motor and 130 bhp :-)l
