1975 Renault 6TL - the fine line between brave and stupid

As it happens, to prevent me buying another project I've volunteered to pick this one up again where it was left off in August 2015. Free time and work commitments for both me and my housemate meant it's been shoved in a corner untouched for a couple of years. Right hand drive, 1964 Lancia...

I'll still be hanging around on here too, there's some good projects happening that I still enjoy reading about.

1975 Renault 6TL - the fine line between brave and stupid

Today marks the end of my journey with this little car properly because it sold. Perhaps the easiest sale I've had and to someone who really got what this car is. He was quite excited by the whole thing, and who can blame him? It's an exciting car ;) I feel comfortable it's gone to the right...

    1975 Renault 6TL - £600 ono

That's very kind, Neil. This car is now sold and heading off with a very excited new owner. Happily I didn't even have to LOOK at eBay to move it on.

1975 Renault 6TL - the fine line between brave and stupid

If I keep it, I can't see me fixing it at this point now. I have absolutely no desire to remove the engine from the car again and made the decision some time ago that if it looked like I was going to have to then the car would go. Finding the time, the weather, the help and the tools to do...

Finally, an overview of the exterior and the collection of spare parts that will come with the car. This should be everything you need to get the car fully road legal again.

    1975 Renault 6TL - £600 ono

Today I went through everything on the car and got it all together so it could be put back in one piece and the spares collected up. The only thing I'm aware that's missing is the interior kick panel trim for the passenger A pillar, since this is made from generic black faced carboard type...

That final hurdle can be for the new owner. There is a point in every project where it is sensible to walk away. This is that point for me.

    1975 Renault 6TL - £600 ono

This car is now SOLD £600 Located in Stockton-on-Tees, TS17 Many of you know Crapaud, he has a dedicated thread HERE I've reached the end of what I can and what I want to do with this project so it's time to move it on. I'd like to avoid eBay etc. if I can. Enough people have told me it's...

1975 Renault 6TL - the fine line between brave and stupid

I've reached the end of my journey with this little car now and it is available to purchase. This isn't a decision I've come to emotionally, or lightly, particularly given the work put in and the help received. It is a decision made with my head, rather than my heart, and one that I need to...

    Renault 4 Super

I've never seen a 4 with a rear window like that. Was that a really special option?

1975 Renault 6TL - the fine line between brave and stupid

Here is a little update on the little car. Mike brought the air compressor home a little while ago since we needed it for some other things too and blew the carburettor through. This flushed out some horrible orangey gunge and now fuel gets through the carburettor properly. It had been soaked...

1975 Renault 6TL - the fine line between brave and stupid

I've *just* finished work for today so I can catch up on forum threads. I'll check it again, but the points were gapped and still appear to be opening and closing as they ought when the engine is rotated. My rotor arm may be in the wrong location because it doesn't point at any of the leads...

1975 Renault 6TL - the fine line between brave and stupid

We did try petrol straight down the carb and it was enough to get a few pops down the exhaust but not enough to get it going. Perhaps I didn't put enough petrol down it?

1975 Renault 6TL - the fine line between brave and stupid

Is it possible, then, that the drive cog being a few degrees (on the assumption it should be 90 rather than 60) out could be what's really preventing it from firing?

1975 Renault 6TL - the fine line between brave and stupid

If you read my post above, the diagram in my manual is as follows: This is stated as being correct for the 1181 engine and 1180 in my manual which is not a Haynes book. I can only tell you what I've done and what my instructions tell me.

1975 Renault 6TL - the fine line between brave and stupid

Update time! Ready for some frustration? I bet you are. First job is to rotate the flywheel a full revolution to sort the timing out. It's just about impossible to photograph the valves, but this was the before shot (I think). Check the distributor drive cog and find it's back to the same...

1975 Renault 6TL - the fine line between brave and stupid

Well, if all this time I've been trying to get the car to run with the timing out 180 degrees that would explain a lot, wouldn't it? The wording in the manual makes the diagram I'm using sound like it's for the 1181 and it's the only diagram in the book I can find of that sort so I was under...
