Best but expensive is 123 ignition which replaces the whole distributor I have not had much success with kits but there may be one available.
In the past we have sent the small distributor to a specialist but it would not take the kit.

Hi Jeepman, try Aldon Automotive 01384 572553, they do an electronic ignition conversion for the Ducellior distributors. I have one fitted to the dizzy on my GTL. Your dizzy is probably stamped D287 D83, and of you quote that number they may be able to help you. Their system is all contained inside the distributor, with just two small cables going to the coil. The one I bought for mine cost just shy of £150, part number EP141 for curve D244 D61. Of course they may not do one for your dizzy, but it's worth asking.

Regards Brian.

Thanks Brian, will do.

After chatting to Brian (Cornish4) and Vincent Modica at yesterday's Kent Meeting, I have ordered an Aldon EP141 electronic ignition conversion (about £141 incl. postage and VAT). It is apparently dead easy to fit (although I've heard that before) but a 123 unit transformed my Citroen 2CV6 making it start first time, improved the fuel consumption and smoothed out the mid-range 'performance'. I'll let you know how I get on.

yes please let us know how you get on ,its something i have been looking into .and any info would be welcome

I'm curious as well Paul about the findings, I'm always been a bit sceptic about those kind of solutions.
I mean why pay £141 for parts that are mere worth £15 maximum, it just replaces a capacitor and contact point.
The presented solution is clever indeed and fits inside the existing original distributor housing, the same solution as a 123-ignition though hereby everything is replaced...

In addition Brian I've got to go and buy a dwell meter and, even worse, learn how to use it. I trust nobody

Um... I bought electronic ignition for various cars, just off of eBay for £28 each!
All contained within distributor, all of them worked fine.
Jaguar mk2, Austin A35 & R4 with ducelier distributor, why pay £100+ ?
I wouldn't even consider paying that price for simple electronics, as this is.

You didn't make it to the great Kent Meeting. Trouble with the ignition? (Sorry, I had to get that in). To properly answer your comments, yes, I could have gone for a cheaper one but Aldon Automotive are a reputable company with a good reputation and in July we're driving to Portugal and back. I just feel a tiny bit happier knowing that it's a good piece of kit I've bought. My wife and co-pilot already has reservations about the Renault 4, and I'd hate for her to be proved right.

@Paul Narramore
Of you are contemplating buying an electronic ignition kit, don't waste your money on a dwell meter then.
With electronic ignition you can't measure dwell. Most electronic ignitions work with a Hall sensor.
They don't use braker points. And if they do the dwell angle is not an issue.

Well I was advised at the weekend that the best method of installing the electronic ignition was to remove the distributor and carry out the installing on the bench. Then when the distributor was replaced, it was very likely out of phase a little. I've not done this before, the 123 kit was installed at the garage, so I am being led by others. Brian? Vincent?

You haven't been misled Paul. I think you are mistaking a dwell meter for a stroboscopic light.
You need the stroboscopic light to set the advance.
The dwell meter measures breaker point angle.
Since most electronic ignitions don't use breaker points you will have no use for a dwell meter.

Hello Paul, harbourseal is right, you just need to reset the timing if you've disturbed the distributor, with a strobe-light, but if you make a mental note, or perhaps take a photo before you remove the dizzy, you won't go far wrong at resetting it's position.

Brian, There is a YouTube video of a chap fitting an Aldon device to his Austin Cambridge and it looks a doddle IF the distributor is left in place. I can see the risk of doing this and dropping this tiny screws but hey ho, I'll just have to be careful and magnetise my Pozidrive screwdriver.

These kits are a complete 'doddle' to fit. Took me about 10 minutes, including figuring it out on the first one. No need to remove the distributor, that's just causing extra work and possibly hassle you don't need!!
