I am going to change the oil on my 956cc engine this evening, change the filter as well - how much oil does it need to re fill with a new filter ?

Cheers
Richard

Round 2 tonight.. new sump plug and washer along with hopefully the right filter this time... should have it all oiled up this evening :-)

Question though I have with the new sump plug the copper washer and an alternative metal and rubber washer - verdict - which one to use ?

All done, new filter and sump plug, 2.7lites of 20/50 dribbled in, ran it up, dipstick levels all good, ran it three miles, cooled down checked again and all looks OK. Back in the garage and will check for oil leaks underneath tomorrow.. TICK...

No leak from the sump but a leak from the gearbox oil seal.... Darn it . Gear box out...

Hi Richnd1974, What I mean to say is that, before I started my full restoration project, I had the same problem.
After a lifespan of 20 or even more years, seals will naturally start to wear out. So when you get the gearbox out, replace everything that's prone to wear like gaskets, rings, seals etc. etc.

Hey JdeW thanks and good tip, I plan to change the main gearbox drive seal, clutch plate and bearing - any other seals I should consider while I have the box out ?

Hi Richnd1974, yes the clutch plate and bearing are obvious. In total there are 3 seals, 1 is the clutch shaft seal located in the bell-house, and 2 seals for the drive shafts in the differential house. And a total of 3 gaskets adds everything up e.g. frontlid gasket, upperlid gasket and bell-house gasket.
As described in Haynes take your time on doing work on the gearbox.
Good luck, Joop

Thanks Joop - will be locating and ordering all the bits ready, Clutch kit, I have the shaft seal already so just the drive shaft seals and the gaskets :-) Hopefully mate who is a trained mechanic with 25 years experience will be on hand to help me out :-)

Hi all,

What you guys say about this one? Thinking of a oil and filter change next week.

Thank you
Every R4 uses 20W50 but not all R4's have an oil filter and looking at the can....hmmmm...must be 20W50 for a Mini so it's incompatible with a R4 ;)

Okay Rich, but be beware that, in the late (last) series of GTL (Clan) and TL (Savane) Renault did some serious parts and component messing up...
That's why when you order complete kits at "Der Franzose" they do deliver extra parts just to tackle that part messing up issue
