Hi I’ve just acquired a 1969 R4 in France, where I spend a lot of time. I’m struggling to find a vin number (required when ordering parts) . There was a number by the passenger seat, but it’s not legible due to rust and the number is not on ownership documents. Please see pic’s all help appreciated.

Hi Malachy

You can order a lot of parts using the oval plate number which on yours is: R1120. You can use the engine number to order most engine parts, this should be on a plate on the engine block, probably located to the left of the distributor. You have a 'Billancourt' engine. However, you do need the chassis number for some parts.

Best Regards

Can you take picture of that vin number beside right side seat. On crossmember.
There should be factory vin number that is important no mater that he is rusted and you have other number in papers. This one is relevant for parts ordering.

Here is more about vin number and other numbers important when searcing for parts

Your ViN number should look something like this
VF1 - renault code
1120 - tipe of R4
5795972 - your R4
All together
VF111205795972
Probably with three zero between 1120 and 5795972 as Vin number should have 17 digits.

VF... 17 digit format was only used on 1981 and later cars, so Malachy will not find it anywhere. The stamped number on the passenger sill should be the same as the diamond plate number if the chassis hasn't been replaced in the past.
What is necessary for buying parts is, besides the vehicle type (R1120), the serial number of of the car (the six digit number on your oval plate). Engine serial number was mentioned very rarely at changeover points so don't rely on this. Engine type (yours should be 680-02) is useful to remember, though.

There you go!

I am obviously to young to know this. :dontknow:
Thank you Angel something new to learn

Hello, none of these numbers seem to correspond, exactly, with my renault?
The engine no. is 688D7/12
000254210

The oval plate reads: 1123
43120
2422920

Oblong plate:
ABE NR 3774/4
VF1◇112300
E0016608
1025K
0000KG
1-500KG
2-570KG

Can you advise?

Am trying to find out horsepower

German spec 845cc car , 1984 model year, converted to 1108cc. Engine is R4 GTL so horsepower should be 34HP if not already fitted with R5 carburettor.
