What have we done this time (R4 F4)

Not in kitchen but on work desk in garage where my kingdom is. :)
Another adventure begins my friend !
I have just caught up with this news
What a great project - my girlfriend wants one for her floristry deliveries

You are completely right.....another crazy adventure on horizon.

Similar idea is crossing my mind. Find local pizza restaurant and do deliveries around town with yellow F4.
That would be fun!

Mean while i got few more pictures of the chassis

All crossmembers are in place and welded

Floor is next in line
169779403_232726841934907_7387729513448039760_n.jpg

But before floor inside of crosmembers need to be protected

If everything goes well sometime next week chassis should be finished and ready to be delivered.

Also have done some test zink plating in my bath

Here you can see left part of the tube frame which is zink plated and left side that is not
IMG_20210407_214848.jpg.25da85909166232352578bb5953d0c93.jpg

Here is same peace where lower part is zink plated and upper part was plated earlier and wire brushed
IMG_20210407_214127.jpg.2fd22bc1ba884d1cf6633cfceb28c30b.jpg

And here is same piece. Left side is freshly zink plated and right side is wire-brushed zink plated surface.

Surface quality could be better and for sure would be better if it was done by professionals.
But surface will be painted any way so i am only want to get some extra rust protection.

Still thinking send small bolts, nuts and spacers to professionals as they won't be painted

They are standard jack brackets but freshly made from metal plate.

Today got some more pictures

Anticorosion 2K epoxy primer is on the chassis.

Now i need to talk to transportation when it will be in Zagreb where i will pick it up and bring back to Vodice.

I am ready
IMG_20210414_214641.jpg

IMG_20210414_214656.jpg

Yesterday picked up brand new chassis made by Andrej Mlinar from Slovenia.
It came to Zagreb in big truck and then i tie it down to my "construction" tight as ham ready to be smoked.

IMG_20210422_152453.jpg

It is sitting in front of my house now.

Hopefully it will go to my garage friends on stands and wait for other parts to bolt on.
If that won't be possible then it will be stored for while until other parts are ready to be bolt on.

A lot of small (but still big jobs) are done. Very dull and boring but must be done.

First i put paint striper on different brackets around car and left for an hour
IMG_20210709_180818.jpg

After that sandblasted in my small sandbox.

received_204256101494933.jpeg

After which i get smoot and clean surface ready for galvanising

IMG_20210709_180824.jpg

In my home made galvanising bath

received_190945769638669.jpeg

After which i get nice and rust protected piece of metal

IMG_20210709_180833.jpg

Next step is antirust primer

IMG_20210707_213519.jpg

And 3 coats if black paint and 3 coats of varnish.

IMG_20210707_213551.jpg

Hope all this will be anought to last for next 20 years :)

We are making progress slow and steady

Chassis striped down. Front torsion bars removed.
IMG_20210920_180607.jpg.4afe3cdb106e473406c0885733c0eebc.jpg

Rear axle is welded to chassis so i need to cut it off (still need to do that)

In the meantime i opened, serviced, cleaned and painted starter and alternator

Starter was in good consdition so nothing had to be done on it.

Valve cover removed, some dents puled out, and painted, valve clearance checked, new gasket put

Some sludge found out inside valve cover.

received_830110634341933.thumb.jpeg.9b91fc111731cdcf72ca5ee32a60a841.jpeg

And it looks like chain is streched a lot.
IMG_20211010_192118.thumb.jpg.2e7898ecc0fd82b823e71592d1889e79.jpg

I could not managed to find how much strech of the chain is aloved. I manage to move it 1,2cm inside on this picture. To me it seems to much.

But in some discussion with Mlinar brothers find out that new reproduction chains are not so good and will strech in less than year. They say (Mlinar brothers) it is better to keep original chain if it is possible

I have already ordered new chain and tensioner
IMG_20211010_190042.thumb.jpg.e771679b07535491c5925c4d3bf86643.jpg

Still did not put it on (have to find time to do that)

New gasket is waiting.

That is it for now.
New adventures are coming soon.

It may just be the photo, but the crankshaft gear looks well worn. In any case, I would try to replace both gears, too.
Tx for comment!

Did not check gears!

How can i tell if gears are so worn that can not be usable anymore?

It is not easy to find new one.

What is you oppinion about quality of replacement chain?

Teeth will be sharp at their edges (new ones have a nice radius). Look closely at the tooth profile and if you notice more pronounced wear pattern at the drive side - the tooth profile will look asymmetric - it's time to change them.
In theory, slightly worn gears will wear a new chain rapidly. In practice it's as you say: gears are hard to find new. They however used to be available as kits (gears/chain) from aftermarket suppliers in the past.
INA is a reputable company regarding modern car timing kits, but if you are still in doubt regarding its quality, you can go another way: Last time I changed a timing chain on an R4, I found a good quality chain (Sedis) from a 70's Peugeot, cut it to the required length minus one link and joined it with a join link. If you fit the clip the right way round, there will be no problem at all.

TX Angel!

Will check teeth and then decide what to do.

Chain that is on engine now is definitely to stretched and must be changed. So there is no much choice i can do.
New chain goes in as i already have it.
Sprockets must locate first

I have to say that 150.000 kms ago I changed the original timing chain and sprockets (and tensioner of course), that was working fine since 220.000 kms before, but since I was taking off the engine to do a major rehauling the mechanic suggested to change them as well. The new one failed me, as I said, after 150.000 kms because (as we saw once the cover was open) the lower sprocket, the smaller one, was almost round shaped from wearing. I don't remember which brand I fitted, but they came from a specialist r4 parts seller that has all my trust for what matters honesty and care in looking after spares. Now I fitted a NOS kit that I bought a few years ago in a classic car fair, let's hope it will last at least another 150.000 kms...
PS: fortunately no arm was done to the engine, the chian slipped but one step and valves didn't hurt anything.

I would be happy if new chain work flawlessly for next 150tkm.

Will.post few pictures of small and big sprocket.
Would like to hear your oppinion shoud sprockets be changed or not.

I can not see any big wearness on sprockets.

Thank you in advance!
