Hello
I have a question regarding engine replacement. I own a Renault 4 TL 1976.
does an engine from a 1978 model fit in the 1976 model.

Should be compatible, as far as I know there aren't major differences between the two, as long as the 1978 isn't one of the first GTL with the 1108 cc Cleon engine.

Is that because the direction of engine rotation changed? 3 or 4 reverse gears and one forward anyone?

Yes, not the best way of driving around.
Also the bell housing is different

as long as same type
to change over to 5 bearing 1108 is far more complicated and will need a complete donor car or a big pile of different parts
