How i love my 2 poster ramp. Marigold is being treated to a new clutch while Cornish4 is away on holiday. Good job as you need to have strong muscles in you left leg as the clutch pedal is bloody hard and with clutch cables no longer availible (unless someone tells me different) i think it would have been a matter of time before it went ping. The clutch release arm is caked up and stiff so a good degrease should sort it out. Its the first time in many years since i have removed a gearbox on a ramp and cant believe how much easier it is..i have usually just taken the whole lump out for other reasons..

Anyway Brian if you have your ipad with you then heres some pictures:eek:

cheers

So it can be done without removing the whole engine?
That's good news as my clutch is probably done within the next season. :(
And yes, clutch cables are still availlabe - franzose.de / reno4er.de

Cheers,

David

Hi David,
Even for right hand drive at franzose?

cheers

Greetings from Washington DC. Hi Andrew, thank you for the pics, I can see Marigold is in good hands. I thought you might find everything a bit dry, and in need of some lube, cos that pedal was getting seriously heavy. You are right about cables being no longer available for RHD cars, well certainly not from Renault, I heard that from Derek of Renospeed, and he should know, but I suppose if push came to shove a new cable could be made, all be it at a price. There are one or two companies in the classic scene that specialise in making them. Just gonna try to get some sleep, jet-lag has got the better of me.

I think i have a brand new clutch cable.......do we know the length of RND clutch cable?
came from Renault itself i believe when my sister owned the car.

Good nick

She looks in pretty good nick under there

Yes she's a pretty sound old car, but I've had to have bits of welding done in the time I've had her for the MOT. Nothing major though, and although she'd had ten owners before me luckily I think she'd been cared for.
Latest news from Washington DC, it's snowing here:(

I didn't know Right hand drive clutch cables weren't available, (the joys of owning a LH drive car :) ) But I've used Speedy Cables to make up specialist cables for jobs for me before. They can make any type of cable you like.

cheers for that Richard

Hi there, greetings from Delaware. Yes Speedy Cables are good people to deal with, they also do rebuilding and recalibrating of speedometers and repairs to other instruments. Hope Marigold is enjoying her holiday in PZ Andrew. Have you taken her for jolly, or does driving a flowery car put you off? :D

Hi Brian...hope your having a great time...snowing???
i did take it out before i started as i had to go the dump with some old oiley oil cans:eek: then i got cramp pushing down the clutch:shock:

gonna continue today on Marigold..done tomorrow..fitting in between jobs..

gonna order the floor panels etc for the pick up from Der franzose. Spoke to them yesterday for inclusive price..257.62 euros..front 2 back floorx2 and inner front floor..

will post some pictures when done
cheers

andrew

Hi Andrew, snow gone now, nice weather again, but a bit chilly. Thanks for windup, as if Marigold would do the tip-run. Glad to hear the bits for pickup are on the way. I've not seen a 4 yet over here, don't think I will, even met a group of classic car fans over the weekend, never heard of a 4. These guys need educating.:D

did they ask if it had a V8 in it?

there is a V6 R4 somewhere isn;t there? R4 body on the Cilo V6 chassis?

I think they were a bit surprised how small the engine is, even my compact hire-car has a 3ltr V6 motor, with of course an auto-box, lovely bit of kit, well it is a Ford. Yes there is a V6 powered 4L, it was built for this years Gumball Rally, it was ugly as sin.

Hi folks, I've got Marigold back from renault4mad, he put in a new clutch, which it needed, plus the pedal is a lot lighter now, lots of lube on the cross-shaft. He's also fitted new front suspension upper links and new radiator, as the old, and probably original one sprang a leak. He also investigated the lowered front suspension, and it looks like the car had new floors fitted in the past and the setting for the torsion-bars had been lost, it was two splines out. She's now about 2 1/2 to 3 inches higher then before, and the ride is much better, and she rolls like a goodn'. Next job is new shockers for the back, old ones are past their best, and I'm thinking of raising the back a small amount in preparation for Thenay next year, all that camping gear to carry.

Glad to hear you're back and reunited with Marigold! Will be interesting to hear how you get on raising the rear if you decide to do it.

Hi Jon, yes I've checked out the Haynes manual, it looks like I need to make up a threaded bar that fits where the shocker would normaly go to take off the tension. Just to raise the back end a couple of inches would be good. I wonder if it is as easy as it sounds. We've been out today in Marigold, enjoying a nice sunny Cornish autumn day.

Hi Brian, I'd be fairly certain its not as easy as that but I'd be happy to be proved wrong! Back when I was younger I had a succession of Mk1 R5s and getting the rear bars out to lower them was seriously hard work!

Its always nice to get a car back after some major work - you can really feel the improvement can't you! I need to get back on with my own fleet maintenance plan at some point :)

Hi David, yes you are probably right, renault4mad gave me a bit of a look when I said I wanted to do it, don't think he is keen at all. Yes it is always nice to get a car back on the road after some work has been done, it's great not to have that heavy clutch pedal now.
