don't see why not..makes sense to me my carb gets filthy from the crud out my rocker cover.

Looks like an oil catch tank set up almost. Probably be best if you had a small sir filter on end of pipe, about 5-8 pounds on internet.

May I ask why ? Surely the oil needs to be returned to the rocker box ?

Johnathan, I believe that it's only for oil fumes that usually pass from the rocker cover to the carb and then through the system and out of the exhaust.
I wonder what effect it would have on emissions tests at the MOT

The crud (or mayonnaise) is an oil and water vapor emulsion caused by driving short distances The only cure is to drive long distances the engine has to get hot and problem solved. An average of 700 miles a week will be enough.

I think this modification was or became standard on the mighty Jaguar XK engine (1949-1987).
I don't see the reason for such a mod on a R4 engine, surely not for environmental or emission reasons.
