Modification of the oil vapor recirculation circuit

Looks like an oil catch tank set up almost. Probably be best if you had a small sir filter on end of pipe, about 5-8 pounds on internet.
 
May I ask why ? Surely the oil needs to be returned to the rocker box ?
 
Johnathan, I believe that it's only for oil fumes that usually pass from the rocker cover to the carb and then through the system and out of the exhaust.
I wonder what effect it would have on emissions tests at the MOT

I think this modification was or became standard on the mighty Jaguar XK engine (1949-1987).
I don't see the reason for such a mod on a R4 engine, surely not for environmental or emission reasons.
