HI all, i was wondering if it is possible to put a smarter steering wheel on a 1986 GTL? Any thoughts or sugestions please.

Cheers Simon.

Hi Simon, you may remember this is the wheel on my car, it's a Mountney, 12 inch one. The boss I found on eBay for a R5. I just had to drill some extra holes to fit it as the boss had 9 holes, and the wheel 6.20200414_162755.jpg

Whilst we're talking 1986 GTL steering wheels, how do you remove the cover "box" trim from the original? I've gently prised, pulled and sworn but to no avail. I have a nice Moto-Lita I want to fit! Thanks.

Hi Eccles60, large flat screwdriver as a lever. It can be stubborn, so don't be scared of it. Nice wheel, it should look good, and much smarter than the original.

I've got this Moto-Lita I bought in Thenay in 2015.
Now I need to put a cover in the middle and refurbish the leather on the crown.
I think it looks nice even if it's quite different from the classic three spokes design

You can get a variety of wheels to fit a Mountney hub like this on on Mums car, as long as they have enough clearance to pass the controls. Or you can get a Springalex hub that can take Mountney wheels as well as their own.

Or a Renault 5 Gordini wheel but they often have perished leather which can be costly ontop of the ridiculous asking prices. And the hubs are hard to find as well. We could not find a hub but found one that allegedly fit but needed a homemade adaptor to fit the wheel on.

You can also fit a Mk1 R12 wheel like Dad has on his cream R4, or a R6 wheel and quite a few others so long as they clear the control stalks, such like an 11 Turbo wheel which looks pretty good.

I've found the black leather steering wheel from my Renault 15TS that was transferred to my R16TX in the late 70's. It has the same spline/nut fixing as the R4, 14 inch (360mm), the hub is 4 inch (100mm) deep to clear the column stalks. The black alloy spokes have thumb spats with a single perforation on each spoke infilled with a rubber grommets. Anyone interested at £50 + p&p or collection from York?IMG_20200518_182258.jpgIMG_20200518_182258.jpgIMG_20200518_182258.jpgIMG_20200518_182258.jpgIMG_20200518_182211.jpg
