Renault Kangoo Van PROBLEMS!!!!

Hi can anyone help me PLEASE my Renault kangoo van temperature gauge shows cold when heater is on hot and blowing out hot air, but when I turn on cold the dial temperature shoots up to hot and the STOP ENGINE sign comes on, water is luke warm in header tank but engine smells hot.
If anyone could help me I would much appreciate it

If the heater throws out hot air when set to hot then it sounds like the thermostat has failed closed. That would stop water flowing to the radiator and would cause the engine to overheat while the radiator stays cold.

If that is the case don't drive the car before you replace the thermostat. Overheating is bad. If you have to drive to a garage do it gently with the interior heater on hot and the fan on full and obey the warning lights.
