Hi all

Mildred is not ticking over at all well

Rob from Chevronics in Hitchin looked over her and he is convinced the carb is the issue. Local specialists are not interested and wont rebuild or even clean it out.

I don't suppose anyone has a good carb knocking around that Mildred could have? If so, I would love to hear from you

Chris

P.S. Rob has a beautiful 1972 red R6 TL by the way!

Why not have a go yourself Chris, cleaning it for a start is dead easy, and it could just be dirt causing the problem. Use petrol in a suitable container like an old roasting tray.

I have a good spare 28IF off an F6 van.
It has the additional pipe which is said to add a few more HP to the GTL engines.
It will come complete with a new gasket set from der Franzose to be installed.

I'm asking 80 Euros + shipment.

PM me if you are interested ...

Cheers,

David

I used some aerosol carburettor cleaner from Halfords. It is surprisingly effective and you can use the spray to blow out some of the drillings as well. Use some kind of rubber glove if you are messing with petrol, it isn't very good for skin and work outside so that you don't gas yourself with the fumes.
You will probably need a new main body gasket. I found one on Ebay, most of the Carburettor restoration outfits on the web seem fixated with SU's and Webers, but the Carburettor Hospital might be able to help.

Good point barnfind, petrol is nasty stuff, I think your suggestion of carburettor cleaner makes sense. A good soak in Gunk or Jizer for a few hours might help too before disassembly. Then just bite the bullet Chris and go for it.

Thanks for the advice everyone. We are going to soak it and see what happens. Rob thinks the blockage could be rusty crud. He suggested soaking in thinners....

If the this doesn't work, I will definitely be interested in the other carb

Hi Chris, I take it that's white spirit and not cellulose thinners, as the latter would probably melt the plastic float, and may damage other parts. I'm not trying to teach my grandmother to suck eggs.

Mildred was laid up for a bit wasn't she, so there is most likely a bit of crud in the fuel tank too. Glad to hear you've stripped the carb, much dirt in there? A useful little modification to do whilst you have the carb in bits is to very slightly enlarge the main-jet, that's the one at the bottom of the float-chamber. It's standard size is .9mm, so get a 1mm drill bit and gently run it through the jet just with your fingers. Marigold started to need a bit of choke to make her run smoothly, but this cured it. Top tip from Derek at Renospeed.

Thanks for the tip! Yeah she was stood for a long time and the carb was full of crud. Fuel tank was awful too, but took that off, cleaned and treated it. No more rubbish coming through from there :)

Yes, I always used cellulose thinners, and agitate the dirt with a stiff bristled brush. I think there is somewhere down in Barnstable where you can get the gasket kits - jjad posted the link ages ago.

Hmm, cellulose thinners is fine isn't it Steve, but you just have to be a bit careful with it don't you. Hopefully all will be ok now Chris with Mildred, but I would be tempted to buy that carb off David, "just in case", it might be useful in the future.

Hi there - I do have a carb -removed from one of my past R4s. (I recall it was fine and engine ran fine before dismantling - due to too much welding again for next MOT ). at the time of removal. Sitting in my garage waiting to be ebayed or sensibly used . Just spotted your request. It should not cost that much to post , just make me a silly offer ?

Hi

Thanks for thinking of me, but I got a replacement carb 3 years ago!

I'm sure someone else will need one though.

Cheers

Chris
