Renault four CV boots.....help

I am pretty knew to Renault fours, I recently bought a 1971 845cc estate and have found that the drive shaft outer CV boots have nothing to tie on to at the wheel end, someone told me that there is a special tripod clip that retains the boot.
I know there were several types of drive shaft and the ones on my Renault four look knew but are they the right ones, mine is model R1123.
Could any one advise me on this, as I have been told it will not pass an MOT without the CV boots being secured with retainer clips at both ends of the boot?

The boots were originally secured by a metal strap, but I normally use a cable tie instead.

CV Boots

I understand that Malcolm but the boots that are on at the present time look far too small as they do not cover the joint, could I send you a photo and then you will see what I mean.

I have down loaded some pictures of the CV boot and has you can see the knuckle joint would be exposed to bad weather if not covered properly, are these really the correct boots? and do I just tie wrap the boot to the knuckle joint?

They are the original double UJ type, and that's the way they leave the factory, the outer UJ is uncovered so nothing needs to be done!

Well Angel thanks for the quick response, I just can't get my head round the fact that wet weather would probably cost severe damage to the knuckle joint from the exposure!
Has no one had such problems because of this type of boot with their R4.
regards
billy

The joints are universal joints. They have seals inside the joint itself so don't need a rubber boot cover (apart from maybe to keep stones out). My '65 car has driveshafts just like that and they are fine.

Later cars use CV joints instead of universal joints. CV joints would be worn away in an instant if the boot split as there is no other form of protection for the joint.

Anyway, weren't you going to post some photos of the car? :D

CV Boots

Hi Malcolm,
I have posted 4 photos in one of the replies to the thread, even at sixty years of age I am still learning.
Thanks once again.

I meant photos of the car :D Can't be many '71 R4s in the UK.

I have downloaded a few pics to give you a general idea what the condition of the car is at the moment, I've just welded a new 2 mill thick floor in the front and sealed it.
considering the age of the car it wasn't really bad body wise and starts on the button first time and runs sweetly.

Silly brat , I used the quick reply and could not download the photos, I could only get four as the battery in the camera went flat.

Shame it has a GTL bonnet. If you ever need an earlier bonnet give me a shout. Otherwise I've been known to weld a plate into the rectangular indicator holes and bolt on the earlier indicators.

Looking like some good progress has been made.

Yes, I recently had to replace one of them on a friend's R4 which broke after 29 years and 450.000 kilometers...

P.S. I envy your R4's bench seat...

You know Malcolm, it might sound stupid but I could not tell the difference regarding the bonnet, I believe the wings must be as well.
The only thing that I thought was strange for the year of the car was the indicators.
I've had a few classic cars and was expecting the round indicators the same as those on the old ford pops.
Out of curiosity how much would it be for an original bonnet.

The bonnet isn't perfect - couple of small dings in it and a little rust hole in the back of the reinforcement at the bottom. Solid enough though. Could do it for £30 with the sidelights. Have a dented aluminium grille too if that's needed. Will send pics if you are interested. They are quite big so tricky to transport.

Sounds all right to me the only problem is transport, just another thought will the wings from the GTL bonnet fit your bonnet?
You haven't by any chance got a drivers door lock and key as well.
billy

The wings were standard throughout R4 production, the only difference being the addition of studs to mount the "carry handles" from 1968.

Planning to have a look for the lock - I will have one, but want to make sure I don't offer part of a matching lock set.

door lock

where are you in Lincolnshire I may have a door lock.
