334-06 Gearbox identification

Getting it together

Hi Guys,
I'm cleaning up (mild restoration) a 4-speed 334 gearbox to replace the 3-speed on in my '64 1123.
The identification tag on the box says it's a 334-06.

I haven't had any success in finding out which vehicle model this box came from, and what might be different about it compared to others.
Might be an issue when getting parts.

I got the box from a deceased estate so I can't query the source as to it's origin.

Does anybody know what it might have come from?
OR any documentation referencing the 06 variant?

Thanks, Geoff

Hi Geoff, are you sure it's a 334 box or if it states 334-05 on the tag?

There should be only 328 box with -06 marking.

I shared your scepticism; I checked the tag several times thinking I had misread it.

But no, it is very clear - see image

The gearbox itself is absolutely a 4-speed 334.

Hey Geoff
nice work finding that, it'll make a big difference.
Re MR145, this should help:
Its about 20 bucks, so probably worth it.
Cheers
Pieter

Well the R1181 all have the 354 square gearboxes not the 334 round gearboxes on the R1180

Well, I'd say it's mystery solved. Thanks for all that guys.

I gained access to an PR880 for the R1180 yesterday. The 1180 has the Billancourt engine with either 334 or 354 while the 1181 has the Cleon engine and 354 gearbox.

The PR880 includes the 334-06 version.
According to it the 334-06 was replaced by the 334-07, with the two being used on vehicles between #244979 and #335024 (except for 7 specific vehicles)

So, not around for very long.

I found no difference in parts between the 06 and 07 versions in the parts manual.
Only the lack of a hand crank starter dog, and associated primary shaft changes, with versions 12, 13 & 13.
And differences with version 04 & 05 seem to be all about the differences between early and later versions of the 04 & 05 than between those two and 06/07.

Seems to me that the 06 & 07 versions were more about the vehicle model they were fitted to than any real difference in the gearboxes.

Anyway, I feel much more confident now about getting the right parts for it.

Thanks for your help
Geoff
