Same to you, Reid, from Scotland but my R4 will be staying active during the winter months (snow here today). Just got my new MOT, with a few advisories around the front wheel bearings and wishbones, so I plan to resume my travel adventures whenever the weather permits. I’m 71 and can’t afford...
I have a pair of gutter-fixing roof bars which graced my Land Rover Discovery 2. They have a large adjustable vertical lift and the cross bars could be easily cut down to match the lesser width of the F4. Happy to part with them for the courier cost. I should be able to find a photo (tried...
Just had my first opportunity to check the door - it works fine. I think that the MOT tester has been trying to open it while locked from the outside. As I said there is ‘give’ in the plunger and, this is what may have caused the confusion, the two lock barrels are 180 degrees apart. So on the...
Thanks for that info, Andrew. I’m not questioning the result of the test, my thought was that maybe the tester had tried to open the door from the out side while locked (the plunger did have some ‘give’ in its locked state) and had caused a breakage in the mechanism. Anyway just need to fix it...
My 4GTL failed it’s MOT today on three issues - fog lamp not working (forgot to check it!), front sidelight not working (always a bit intermittent), and new one to me - front passenger door wouldn’t open, perhaps only from outside. But it was ok the night before. Has anyone had door latch...
I have a Femsa distributor on my GTL and I went for a Gammatronix system, based on a recommendation on this forum, and it delivered an immediate and (so far) a lasting improvement on the car’s power (!) delivery. Very easy to install.
Incidentally I have never experienced any difficulty in...
Coincidentally I used the same type of brush to grease the lower universal joint on my 406’s steering column down the back of the engine rather than from underneath. Much easier!
Here is my installation on my 4GTL - some water pumps have a threaded blank to take a sensor but not mine so I inserted an adaptor into the radiator top hose. The gauge position is not ideal as its visibility is a bit compromised by the steering wheel. All the parts came from eBay.
I started with an 18GTL Estate, then a 21 non-turbo diesel hatchback, a Savannah 2.1TD, 1.4 Megane (1st generation), 1.6 Megane (also 1st gen), and now the 4GTL. I did have a Suzuki Grand Vitara which had a Renault engine and I will be taking delivery of a new Dacia (Renault for the...
Just noticed a 1981 left hand drive Jogging on eBay for sale in Cockburnspath (between Berwick and Dunbar on the east coast) - under Classic Cars and in need of restoration.
That information is on here somewhere, Martin, because I replaced brake pipes at the rear of my R4, mainly around the limiter, and got the correct pipe and connectors as a result of info here. I have an inkling that the male are metric but the female not.
I got fed up waiting for Amazon to ship my exhaust parts and cancelled my order. I’m going to patch and repair if necessary over the summer and autumn months until the next MOT. Checked Franzose and available there but €60 for postage!
Thanks for that, Malcolm. I’m not replacing the pipe that attaches to the manifold (fortunately as it will probably need new studs when the time comes), but after that it’s going to be Imasaf, Bosal and Bosal. Angle grinder and hammer will be on standby……….
Tried searching on the net but couldn’t find anywhere that had all the parts I needed, apart from Amazon which I usually manage to avoid for any purchases. And although I’ve only put 2,000 miles on the car since getting it back on the road, 7 years have elapsed since I last bought similar parts...
Spent a little time at the weekend moving my front numberplate and swapping over to a better set of wheels and tyres. I think that it looks more of a piece with the numberplate moved above the bumper. In the process I noticed that 50% of the exhaust is past its best - so I‘m looking for...
All good now - checked the needle valve and put it all back together and watched for signs of leakage with the engine running and the air filter off. Of course I should have removed the air filter long ago to see where the leak was……..
I have a petrol leak which appears to be coming from the top of the float chamber, and dripping on to the inlet manifold. It’s been there for a while but fairly slight. It’s more visible now as I cleaned the carb exterior before replacing the main gasket (which I assumed might be the source of...
Not all of the UK benefits from ethanol-free Esso 99. Scotland, North Wales, North England, Devon and Cornwall all have up to 5%, due to ’technical supply issues’ according to their website. I was just checking before heading out to fill up.
