I’m struggling to see what advantage I’ll gain by removing the wings - all the holes are underneath - so I think that I’ll work there to remove the rusted metal first and then clean and assess what remains.

This last pic gives me most concern given its proximity to the chassis rail.

Sounds like a wheel bearing. Even if there is no detectable play. You might be able to feel a roughness when rotating the hub by hand, or by applying a screwdriver/stethoscope. Or perhaps a dry universal joint. Have you checked all the gaiters for splits?

Mine is covered by HIC, same group as Adrian Flux, and came in at £152 which includes breakdown recovery and an annual mileage limitation of 3,000. Next time I might add it to my main multi-car policy with NFU Mutual as I’ve a similar quote from them but a 6,000 mile limit.
