    The Cost of Welding

Finally back on the road with a new MOT and the floor panels I bought years ago put to good use. I found a couple of garages locally which advertised classic car restoration, one of which also did MOTs and offered car recovery. So thanks are due to David Graham Vehicle Repairs of Falkirk who did...

    The Cost of Welding

Taking your suggestion on board, Malcolm, would the fold be where the chalk line is in the pic? I’m not sure that that will provide the required access. By the way it’s only the offside that is holed. The nearside is ok - the whole in the floor underneath gives a clear view of the inside of the...

    The Cost of Welding

Spot on, Malcolm! I can see some holes when shining a torch up behind those triangular panels. Thanks again.

Thanks for that, Malcolm, I’ll have a more in depth look.

    The Cost of Welding

I’m struggling to see what advantage I’ll gain by removing the wings - all the holes are underneath - so I think that I’ll work there to remove the rusted metal first and then clean and assess what remains.

    The Cost of Welding

This last pic gives me most concern given its proximity to the chassis rail.

    The Cost of Welding

Today my R4 has returned to my garage without any welding done. The MOT garage reckoned that they would need to remove inner and outer front wings to get access - the holes are in front of the footwells - and were a little reluctant to go down that road. So after an initial panic (thinking worst...

    Gearbox tol

An open-ended spanner worked for me - 10 or 11mm, one was a good tight fit.

    The Cost of Welding

An update - never assume! While I thought that my hole ‘repairs’ had been found out, in fact they hadn’t. I thought I should get some pics of the holes to take to other repair shops for a quote but when I got under the car I found two new holes which obviously had been opened up by the MOT...

Thanks for these replies. I’m going to get a quote elsewhere locally.

    The Cost of Welding

When I bought my 4GTL it came with two ragged holes just behind the front wheels each side at the jacking points. I wasn’t too concerned about these as I don’t use the official jacking points, preferring for quick wheel changes to use under the front wishbones and the pointed nipples under the...

Whats my noise? 1985 LHD Renault 4 TL R1123

Sounds like a wheel bearing. Even if there is no detectable play. You might be able to feel a roughness when rotating the hub by hand, or by applying a screwdriver/stethoscope. Or perhaps a dry universal joint. Have you checked all the gaiters for splits?

    Pumps and more

I’ve been tidying my garage and came across some items bought in the early days of R4 ownership when I was a little lacking in experience of the many engine variants. These don’t fit my 4GTL. Water pump for 845cc - £25 Petrol pump for 845cc - £10 Steering rack boots - £12 all inclusive of 2nd...

    Classic insurance

Mine is covered by HIC, same group as Adrian Flux, and came in at £152 which includes breakdown recovery and an annual mileage limitation of 3,000. Next time I might add it to my main multi-car policy with NFU Mutual as I’ve a similar quote from them but a 6,000 mile limit.

    R4GTL battery-which?

I got an Excide Excell 45Ah Type 048 on eBay back in July for £49. Fits perfectly.

Nice 405! There are surely less of them on U.K. roads than R4s?

    Femsa Distributor electronic ignition possible?

I used to think that my car ran pretty well but now with new points and Gammatronix it is super smooth and quieter. Amazing!

    Femsa Distributor electronic ignition possible?

Well I tried adjusting the timing but just couldn't get the engine to run smoothly so I thought I'd try another set of points (and worth mentioning that the original set that I decided to replace were well wasted although the car has always ran well). The first replacement set were Wipac but the...

    Femsa Distributor electronic ignition possible?

I rushed out and bought one of these Gammatronix sets and decided that it might be best to replace the points before fitting it. Fitting the new set was fairly straightforward (and a skill that I learned many years ago - but never Femsa!) but after a few attempts at setting the 0.4mm gap...
