    Petrol Tank Replacement

I've finally bitten the bullet here and acquired a Fiesta plastic tank which will fit quite easily in place of the old tank but will certainly mean that the spare wheel will have to move. But don't expect rapid progress - it's on a long list of things to do before the MOT.

    Anti freeze

My R4 has spent so long in my garage while I manage to find odd moments to work on it that it needs a change of antifreeze. Currently it's got old style ethylene glycol-based blue antifreeze but I have a ready supply of orange OAT bought in excess for my Discovery. Does anyone have any reason...

    GTL Exhaust Woes

Many thanks for these responses - it appears that I only need to replace the underfloor pipe (it's an 86-registered car).

    GTL Exhaust Woes

I've had my GTL for about 5 years and it has been garaged while I occasionally found time to tackle some of its issues. During this time I've also been collecting parts - mainly off eBay. Now I'm taking a bit of time off work, a trial retirement, and hope to get the car on the road this summer...

    Petrol Tank Replacement

I was thinking about adapting a plastic tank from another vehicle - it is just finding a question of the best shape. I did look at marine plastic petrol tanks - they are nicely cubical but possibly might be frowned up on by a vehicle tester. Whereas one from another car will not only beat the...

    REFERENCE NUMBERS

I'd recommend taking the drum off first to see what lies behind - my 4GTL needed new backplates and I was advised on this forum that if they had a widened vent at the bottom then the brake type would be Girling. So I searched for ages to find Girling backplates (Citroen AX ones which need a...

    Remounting a tyre

R4 tyres are easy to fit. Tyre levers are a must, as is rim lubricant. I found motorbike tyre lubricant on eBay. There's lots of demos on uTube on DIY tyre removal and fitting.

    Petrol Tank Replacement

Has anyone replaced the standard R4 tank with a modern plastic tank? I realise that most plastic tanks will have a electric lift pump installed but that shouldn't be a stumbling block. I suppose that the shape might be a problem as plastic tanks are usually complicated mouldings to fit ahead of...

    A favour required

Happy to oblige Stan but you maybe need to be a bit more precise. Offside wing presumably. But for what purpose? To which position on the inner wing?

    Hallo from north Scotland

I had a Savannah 2.1DT 7 seater, brilliant car, until the gearbox decided that 5th gear was sufficient for all needs - no! But I wish I'd kept it. Meanwhile my Renault aspirations are kept in check by an R4GTL so if you're ever in Central Scotland get in touch........ there is an R4 graveyard up...

    Renault Express

Yes, 'Extra' in the UK and Ireland, and 'Rapid' in Germany.

    Renault Express

No, based on the 2nd generation R5 with transverse engine but a nice, practical car in the R4 mould. Enjoy!

    tyre change

This looks like a far better method of dislodging the tyre off the rim than the way I've been doing it. Must give it a try. Thanks!

    tyres from Serbia

Have to admit that my towbar-based method for getting old tyre off rim failed me tonight. However my bench vice came to the rescue as I managed to squeeze both sides off, probably only possible on my vice with 135 wide tyres.

Anybody with a Renault Parts book?

Nothing came up in the P.R.1104. I could send you a copy of it but it's about 34mb. Can't remember where I found it on the net but there'll be a link somewhere on this forum.

    Ready source of R4 headrests!

Just been checking what's available on eBay - nothing from Rover 800 but plenty of similar looking headrests from the 200, 400, and Range Rover P38 which look like they might have the wide fixing (24cm?) that the GTL needs.

    Handbrake Cables

Thanks, Malcolm. Piece of cake really. I've spent too many hours recently wrestling with the innards of my son's VW Lupo and forgotten that the R4 is from a different planet.......

    Handbrake Cables

Can someone explain how best to remove the handbrake cable from the backplate? All of the manuals are strangely silent on this. Is it a push fit and just needs brute force to remove or is there some more subtle agent at work here? And we are talking GTL (rear) brakes here. Merci mes amis.

    tyres from Serbia

I bought a couple of tyre levers on eBay, also valves, valve puller, and tyre lubricant, all for about £20. The difficult bit is getting the old tyre off the rim but there are various ways of doing this and it can actually turn out quite easy - I made a T-piece of 2 bits of wood - one long...

    tyres from Serbia

I bought a pair recently for £30 made in Holland for Swiss firm Maloya. I'm hoping they'll be good. Earlier in my R4 history I bought a pair of Montanas for £41 from Romania; they are almost in the M&S category. All from eBay of course and all fitted at home. Just need to get them...
