    Headlight lenses

The best arrangement is to have clear lenses and add yellow bulbs for that quintessential "French" look. Using P45T bulbs, which fit into the circular holders you'll have 60/55 watt halogen bulbs, and you can slide a yellow cap over the bulb, still gaining that "French" look, but with seriously...

    SEV no spark at points

Yes, number 1 cylinder is at the front of the car, nearest the flywheel, as explained on page 42 of the workshop manual. Remember that you might have the engine 360 degrees 'out', which might explain why it won't fire. The engine goes through TWO complete cycles for every one power stroke in...

    MOT reject

I've seen the same thing on a more recent Renault; a Clio! At my recommendation a customer of mine took their car to a local tyre fitting baby for 2 new rear tyres. The fitter removed and attached the wheel using an air powered tool (quite normal practice) but the vibrations caused the lining to...

    Cam Distributor Shaft Replacement

I'd forgotten about that. Water-cooled Dafs used 1100 & 1300cc Renault engines and the wiring was identical, producing the same effect.

    Cam Distributor Shaft Replacement

This may sound like a silly question, but bear with me: Switch on the ignition but DON'T start the engine. The oil pressure warning light should now be ON. With the ignition still on, disconnect the wire from the pressure sensor in the engine block. The warning light should now be OFF. If the...

    best oil for the job

As your Renault does NOT have filter the oil isn't being cleaned, so it will become dirty more quickly. The French article produced here says to change the oil every 5,000 Km (or 3,100 miles) but I've always believed in changing it more than the manufacturer says, so I would half that and change...

    best oil for the job

In the absence of a filter I would change the oil every 1,000 miles. Idk I were you I should use Castrol Magnetic 10W40, which I've always found a really good oil for classic engines. Remember to flush the engine with flushing oil first, as this will shift any crud around the valves & the oil ways.

JUST IN CASE - s'il vous plaît?

Have faith, my friend! I should have thought any French garage would be able to sort out a Renault, in much the same way was any British garage, regardless of franchise, would be able to sort out a Ford. My R.A.C. membership offers European cover, so perhaps check out any breakdown cover you have.

Decisions: Put Existing 4GTL On Road Or Buy A “New” One

I take it the 1986 one's a R.H.D. car, given that you've quoted a mileage in miles, not Kms. if so, it's a no brainer-go for the restoration of the R.H.D. car. You'd have a car that you'd know very well, as you'd have done (or been party to) the restoration and a R.H.D. car is easier to drive in...

    Fuel Gauge

Using a multimeter, check that there's 12 volts at the fuel sender when the ignition is on, by connecting one side of the meter to the 12 volt feed from the dashboard and the other side to a good earth. If there is, then the dashboard & wiring is in good order. Now use the resistance setting on...

    135 80 R13 70T

Firestone make these-well, they did a couple of years ago. I use this size on my little Daf 33 and Firestones are a respectable brand.

Trying to identify the various Ducellier parts to replace? Points, condenser, distributor cap and rotor arm are all in line for replacement

I've only looked at the pictures you've posted, but it looks like the points gap is too small. The engine appears to have come to a halt with the points at the highest gap (I may be wrong on this, and it may be the angle of the picture) and this looks too close. I also noticed the rotor arm...

    Fit a Water Temperature Gauge

It appears that your car's cooling system may have an air lock somewhere. Once warm, the sensor will become hot enough to turn the fan ON, which will cool the water in the radiator. As this cooler water passes through the pipes it reaches the sensor, which becomes cooler, and it turns the fan...

    New here.

I can't offer you a 4 to see, but admire your other French cars; my 1994 Xantia was the most comfortable car I've ever owned and I said goodbye to it after 250,000 miles, many of them on French autoroutes on holidays across that country! Easy to fix yourself, the 2 litre engine was a dream to...

Try spraying the offending switch with electrical contact cleaner; it might cure the problem.

    4CV CARB PROBLEMS

I'm glad you've found the cause of the problem! I should think new mixture screws can be obtained. If the diaphragm is damaged air will leak past it and the car won't accelerate quickly. As explained above the accelerator pump pushes a "shot" of petrol into the carburettor when the pedal's...

Renault 4TL carb and electronic ignition

I've used the carburettor exchange in Leighton Buzzard, in Bedfordshire. https://www.carburetterexchange.co.uk/ They've rebuilt carburettors for a number of my cars in the past.

    4CV CARB PROBLEMS

It's possible there could be an air leak from some of the gaskets in or around the carburettor. From experience it's likely to be the gasket between the carburettor and the inlet manifold. Try tightening the securing nuts and bolts & see if this helps. If the gasket look damaged or worn, perhaps...
