The plain doors are much less rust prone than those with GTL trim which are a bad water and salt trap- If it was down to me I would be leaving all those trim panels off.

Haynes manual for Renault R5 mk 1 shows this as the Solex 32 EISA and the flap is the defuming valve. Having said that, I believe some late model French spec R4s did have them.

I have one like that I bought with a manifold from Le Palace de Ancienne in France, as a Solex 32 off an R4. It looks bloody complicated! Was going to overhaul it and replace the zenith 28 but not so sure now...

When you say warm a little warm is fine. Better to be warm than cold, but not hot enough to fry an egg on or noticeably slow the car down. The whole drum brake system has lots of extraneous play otherwise.

There is a fine art to adjusting with the manaul adjusters and it takes practice, but a useful trick is to treat them as if there is a lot of lost motion in the adjustment. I.e. when you back them off, by the time they free up you've gone too far. Practice backing off just a little so they still...

Are you sure you have the same type of suspension parts on each side? Suspension geometry changed slightly for the '69 model and if you have a different upper or lower wishbone or stub axle from one side to the other (ie if wrong secondhand spares used for a crash repair) it will throw it out...
