    Engine clatter

I had a very similar problem on an 845 cc engine. It turned out to be a loose fanbelt pulley on the camshaft. The three bolts (setscrews actually) that hold the pressed steel pulley on hadn't been tightened up properly allowing the bolts to back off and let the holes in the pulley hub to wear...

    680 (747cc) distributor mountings

PR785 is for early 3 speed Spanish cars, PR 808 is sixties French built 3 speed and early 4 speed cars, the last one {PR number 953 but cut off) is early to mid seventies 4 speed cars with various gearboxes. I used a later type clamp down on an earlier block. This required making a piece of...

    680 (747cc) distributor mountings

As long as the bottom collar has enough reach to allow the distributor to go down far enough for the drive dog to fully engage you are OK. Then you just have to fake up a mounting to hold it. Renault tried a variety of dizzy attachments on the early engines. They seemed obsessed with the idea of...

how often is it normal to fill expansion tank with water?

I agree, I assume the later bottle has a higher blowoff pressure. With the old bottle and valve never a problem even in Australian summers, so I believe the valve works, just set to a lower pressure. I should try measuring it one day.

how often is it normal to fill expansion tank with water?

I have a car with an old Billancourt engine, and at one point in a fit of enthusiasm I fitted a new plastic expansion bottle and valve from the latest b1b version- however it regularly started losing water/coolant from various places including the water pump bearing (which was on a newish water...

    135 80 R13 70T

Damn those Pirellis look fine! (As Ernest Hemingway would say). I am going to have to find an extra set of rims. Hey Malcolm, I have the pre 1969 front suspension set up, which means only 7 degrees castor angle and a helper spring in the steering box. How much difference to heaviness of steering...

    135 80 R13 70T

I had heard a wild rumour to the effect that although Michelin no longer list them on their site they occasionally do runs of their last Energy tyre in that size that are very quickly snapped up, going to car clubs in France, and outlets like Feu Vert, but I have no proof. I would love to know...

    4CV CARB PROBLEMS

I would seriously consider putting a larger carb from a dauphine or R4 on it. Trying to tune tiny tiny carbs, especially seventy year old ones, just does my head in.

    New accelerator cable required.

Many R4s have the same inner cable as a variety of bicycle brake cables. It would be worth taking the broken one to a bike shop.

    Radiator for a billancourt engine.

If you have metal top and bottom tanks might be worth getting the existing one recored. This is standard practice in Australia.

    Rodeo Recommissioning

There are two types, earlier sheetmetal and later moulded plastic but they are both interchangeable. Likewise for the fan there is the much more desirable later nylon one or the earlier sheetmetal 6 blade version. On Ebay there are a couple of US sellers of Wheelhorse 250 ride-on tractor parts...

Fuel tank drain plug bushing came loose

I don’t trust epoxies etc unless you can do it in a laboratory. Two ways I would do it: People do weld or braze fuel tanks provided the tank is entirely filled with water. Alternatively if you cannot find anyone to do that, weld or braze a large flange to the sump plug outer, then fix the flange...

    Mystery VIN Number

That “9” is too squiggly to be a nine, looking at it close up I’d say it’s an 8 that hasn’t been fully stamped. So I’d say it’s definitely an early R1128. Let’s see the diamond plate.

    Questions about F4//R5TS//Suzuki...

I actually bought a pair from a wrecker but found with the booster on the front brakes I didn’t really need it and shelved the project at that point. Still got the calipers

    Questions about F4//R5TS//Suzuki...

Do you know that Subaru cars from the late 1970s/ early 1980s also had disc brakes with the handbrake being on the front disks, and a similar disc size to Renault 4s, 12s etc. Might be worth investigating that if you are interested.

    F4 Insurance

Hold on, was the car originally imported to go on the 4L Trophy, or are you intending to take it on the 4L Trophy yourself? If the latter I’m kind of not surprised, insurance companies are wary of that stuff and reckon you can afford it. I imagine it’s different in France because going in the...

    Renault Goelette SOLD

You should try selling to Goodwood Revival types, it's potentially quite historic. Or a Christmas present for wives to buy for their husband with a D type...
