    Front brake upgrade

Why do you specifically want discs? The reason I ask is it is an incredible amount of work for the payoff, and if you are just after more stopping power/less pedal pressure in town and on the freeway/motorway, rather than being able to do the monte carlo without them fading by the time you get...

    Handbook wallet

Hey, what about for earlier cars (thinking 67-68)? Was there a wallet for those? What was the rest of the car like Angel? Cheers Piet

    Identification help

The German plate might be a bit of a red herring, but indicators to local manufacture would be rough roads options, typically a petrol tank guard and thicker front anti-roll bar. R4s were assembled from CKD kits in Heidelberg, Victoria up until 1968 but a couple of points- very early cars (ie...

    What year is my R4?

My Dad got a bunch of R4 spares for me when in SA in the mid 70s and mentioned being told R4s were still being assembled on a sub rosa basis, but I don't know if there is any truth to this at all. Does any of the car plates have a 3 digit country number? If it had been brought in privately from...

    Windscreen template needed please

If you went to a print shop or office support company (eg Officeworks which are everywhere in Australia- but don't know UK equivalent) with the template they could scan it and give you a pdf. Then anyone could take a pdf to similar plces and get them printed out to correct size on a flatbed...

    Anti-Roll Bar Help

You can fit rear anti-roll bars to any cars with pressed trailing arms with no holes in them. There is already a thread on the forum about how to do it, you should be able to look it up. When the rear anti-roll bar first came in it was an option for "rough roads" cars only in some markets. It...

    Hot starts ?!

The phenolic spacer is really important. They had them fitted when new but you often find on older cars they have gone missing or just replaced with a normal gasket and nothing else. I had same problem, correct spacer was missing, cut one out of 6mm phenolic sheet. This has so far worked fine...

    R16 Engine Conversion

As an impressionable child in the 70s I saw a Renault 4 with an R16 engine. Most of the firewall had to be chopped away to do it so it requires a lot of customising and general butchery. So I personally would not recommend it. Just my opinion. As for other cars- Renault 16 obviously, would make...

Thinking of fitting a non return valve to fuel line...why?... read on.

It seems to me more likely the fuel is draining out of the float bowl. It would have to go uphill to go back into the fuel pump. Look for leaks around the flat bowl bottom screws- drain plug and the adjustment screws.

Coasting in gear vs putting in neutral

Best method Look for a nice tall truck going your direction at the speed you want. Pull in behind and get sucked along. You don't have to be dangerously close- in a R4 even quite far away - well within safe/normal distances you will notice you can let the throttle pedal up significantly. I just...

Head restraints - not as expected

After a lot of looking I ended up getting a pair of these slip-on head rests from Germany: https://oldtimer-ersatzteile24.de/Seats_183 99 Euro each and pretty nice quality- they do them in a variety of colours. I bought a pair a couple of years ago after a cervical fusion, have them on my '68...

    Got a spare £30-40K?

An R4 covered in R4s, or made up of tiny R4s...... is this a meta-R4? Or a trans-four-mer?

Reasons why R4 lean to side in the curve

The other reason it rolls so much is suspension geometry- the roll centre for the trailing arm set up is at ground level. Adding an anti- roll bar at the rear works wonders, but at the detriment of ride.

Manual to aultomatic for Renault 4 is it possible.

Another possibility might be a Ferlec electric clutch set-up out of a Renault Dauphine.

    Petrol Overflow

I found this happened quite a lot in hot weather, i.e cold morning, warm afternoon. I think the problem is not just the petrol expanding because it happens when the tank is quite a bit under 100% full. Its also trapped air expanding with no vent at the top of the tank on the left hand side. So...

    Courier Service in France

Further to that airmail from the UK is currently taking 2 months to get to Australia, as UK post can't find planes to put it on. They aren't actually telling anyone about that though, so everyone in the UK thinks mail to the colonies is perfectly fine. and it seems to be either going by sea or...

    Courier Service in France

Tom, I had a similar issue. It was with La Poste colissimo internationale, they were only taking parcels for some countries depending on how long they thought it would take to get through. They are now taking more but only at the higher classes of mail. Some non-postage couriers will be different.

EV conversion kit (for when the dreaded day arrives)

Well, bog standard solar panels aren't very efficient but the latest generation are getting up to 20%. And solar energy non-recurring is free, so its moot. But I havent done any sums on volume of hydrogen and I take your point, you'd be better off driving an electric motor via a battery- but...
