Customs Duty on parts from Italy

If Sweden to leave the E.U., would that be called "Sexit"......? Sorry!

Customs Duty on parts from Italy

I should add that since Brexit I've imported parts from Dafhobby in The Netherlands (for my Daf 33), Pragos in The Czech Republic and Skopart24 in Germany (both for my 1961 Skoda Octavia Super), all without any problems and with extremely quick delivery times. The only funny thing was a remark...

Customs Duty on parts from Italy

The German company has it correctly organised (an example of German efficiency!) and the Italian one does NOT. As the German site says, they export goods from the E.U. without V.A.T., which is then added by the U.K. Customs at this end. The Italians seem to have it back-to-front (I was going to...

A "drive by" in a Renault 4....... I think not!

Customs Duty on parts from Italy

This is how it works: When the United Kingdom was a member of the European Union good and services traded within the various countries within the Union were not subject any charges over and above those that would be charged on goods and services moving within the same country. Put simply...

    Head lamp bulbs

You don't need to adapt a bulb. A P45t (note the 45, not 43) bulb is a 60/55 watt halogen one, with a circular fitting! I've been fitting these to my cars for years and they work perfectly. You gain halogen power and light without compromising the originality of the fitting, although I should...

    Head lamp bulbs

Yes, you're right. Six volt systems have wiring that's much thicker than a 12 volt system, as the amperages it handles are twice the amount.

    Wiring ignition switch

It's possible that the new ignition switch has an "accessory" option, so that a radio, for example, can be used without the ignition being on, but will be switched off when the key is removed. Could be better than your old one anyway!

    Unusual MOT Failure

As I remember from my days as a tester, the doors have to open, although they don't have to be opened from inside, providing the outside door handle can be reached from inside the car. I remember testing a car where the driver's door catch was broken. I spoke to the senior mechanic, who...

    Bogging down when revving

If the ignition system's OK then it must be the mixture. Try weakening it off a little and cleaning the jets.

    Bogging down when revving

Yes, incorrectly gapped points would cause similar symptoms. The best way to set them is by using the dwell angle measurement. This is a measure of the angle (usually expressed as an angle, but sometimes as a percentage) that the points remain closed in the cycle. If you know this reading and...

    Bogging down when revving

Either too much fuel or the correct amount of fuel not being burnt properly. You didn't mention changing the condenser, which, were it to fail, would produce the symptoms you describe, particularly ignition failure under load.

    R4 - shudders/jumps and now won't start

This is exactly where I think the problem may be. The 1108cc Renault engines were used in Daf 55 & 66 cars, of which I have more experience, and this was a frequent problem. If there's even a small air leak in the area then as the engine revs increase the air leak will become a flood, thus...

    R4 - shudders/jumps and now won't start

Re-setting the points gap means that you now need to re-set the timing. I've outlined the static method above, but I agree that getting the engine running smoothly at about 2000 RPM, then turning the distributor until the engine's running at its maximum speed is a good way to get it near enough...

    R4 - shudders/jumps and now won't start

It might be my age, but it was stockings when I was younger........ But enough of this frivolity, is the Renault sorted yet?

    R4 - shudders/jumps and now won't start

ABSOLUTELY! That was the "back of a fag packet" (quite literally!) method we used in extremis at the roadside, too!

Needs choke out to run or will stop

Screwing it IN weakens the mixture and screwing it OUT enriches it. Usually that means ANTIclockwise to enriches and clockwise to weaken. I hope you sort it!

Needs choke out to run or will stop

As it was (presumably) running properly when it want in the barn, I'd suggest the residual fuel in the tank is past its best and so enriching it with the choke out is giving the engine extra rich fuel, which is weak in the first place, thus giving the engine normal strength fuel. Fill the tank...
