I had the same problem with claude (the van) and ended up replacing the section of the gear change rod with the gear knob on the end - it did help that I was at Clementine's Renault 4 garage at the time and was able to root around his box of bits. :) They seem to come in a variety of lenghts...

Richard I ought to point out that Blanche has been resprayed from the from the stripe downwards with a colour that almost, but does not quite, match the original white - but this could be, as you pointed out, due to fading of the original colour. By the way Blanche is a 1990 french LHD TL.

Stormy Weather Ermintrude hopes it wasn't too wet for the Kent run today - and Blanche says as she's just been polished that she is definately not going out in the rain.

I've noticed that our local Halfords have a selection of disk pad springs but I'm not sure if any are suitable for an R4 but may be worth a look in Halfords.

Our handbook (1989) says to change the air intake position when the ambient temperature reaches +5°C - but this seems to be a little cool to me. Perhaps, as you have discovered, trial and error is the best way to set it!
