A GALLERY OF GORGEOUS - please contribute !

It's my 1975 R4 with the single speed wiper motor. Wipers on such systems always park on driver's side. After 1977 when they changed to two-speed motor and longer blades, they parked diagonally on passenger's side. (Wipers worked really hard one day before I shot this photo!)

Altering its length has an effect on castor angle.

early and late rear suspension interchange

Early suspension arms will also fit late chassis without having to drill holes. At least that was the case with a 1979 chassis that I fitted 1972 suspension on.

I broke down in 'Noddy' today ! Update.

I had this happen on a friend's R4 some years ago because a parts shop gave her a cap that would fit on the filler neck (presumably from a newer Renault), without checking if it was vented or non vented. Car would stop running after a medium to long trip and would start again after some 10...

    Water Pump Replacement

The pulley backplate is an interference fit on the shaft and not meant to be removed / reinstalled. It can be done in a press with suitable supprts but you may run into other problems like different shaft diameters etc. It's better to find another suitable water pump.

    SEV no spark at points

Are you testing ignition coil primary circuit resistance with terminals removed? If yes, and if resistance is that high, the coil is faulty. Normal primary resistance is around 3 Ohms.

    Engine clatter

Piet, this is an early engine (five digit serial number), so it has timing gears. Your comment on this is right; the middle (fibre) timing gear will wear after some time, and camshaft drive will become sloppy, this may lead to noise at the front of the engine because engine ancillaries are being...

Looking for Renault R4 Ignition Coil Part Reference Number

It will be OK. In fact, any coil with a primary resistance of about 3 Ohms will do.

    Ride height?

The tie rod is OK, it does not affect ride height anyway. Did you remove one or both torsion bars?

    Clutch noise

You can feel a rumble on the clutch pedal when slightly depressing it.

    Issues around idling

845 engines with small carburettors had the restriction for oil vapour recirculation hoses built in the inlet mainfold, at the point where the 90 deg. pipe fits, so it's normal not to find anything in the hoses. Check that throttle butterfly shaft does not have excessive play and that butterfly...

    Oil Filters

Purflux LS932 is the part number for post-84 engines (M20 thread). LS169B is the earlier (3/4"UNF) filter part number.

    R5 Alpine/TS

I agree with Reidar, if you can find a 5 speed HA1 go for it. Type HA1-003 has a final drive ratio of 3.625:1 which suits better Alpine's torque curve. Regarding the engine, if there is no damage to pistons themselves or camshaft, the rest of internal parts are common with other 1397 Cleon...

    Engine clatter

Check also the inlet/exhaust manifold and its gaskets. A blown exhaust port gasket produces a loud knock, oddly.

    SEV no spark at points

If this is the oval plate number, car is 1974 model year. On the terminal screw on Andy McGhee's photo there is a stack of nuts and washers; among them there is a fibre one (insulating) that must be placed first (closest to distributor body). Check also that the plastic block that holds the...

    MOT reject

I had also seen this happen on a rear R4 drum. That's why many people prefer rivetted than glued-on brake linings.

    SOLEX 32 EISA

845 R5s were partially fitted with a Solex 32 SEIA and partially with a 32 DIS carburettor, both of them being used on the larger engined R5s, too. These will fit on your inlet manifold. You can also fit a Zenith 32 IF7 as fitted on the latest 845 engines. Some jet tweaking may be necessary on...
