    Rebuilt engine, cranks, wont start

There's an even simpler way of checking- with No 1 cylinder supposedly at TDC remove the spark plug from no 1 cylinder and with ignition OFF, hold your thumb over it, then turn the engine over slowly either by turning the fanbelt pulley, fan hub, or having it in gear and pushing the car forward...

Need to stop students killing R4's

I think de Carbon are still de Carbon but they are owned by Delphi. The factory when I last visited is near Nice. They do the R4 de Carbon shocks in batches each year and they are very quickly sold out over the summer holidays when everyone gets a set and fixes their R4 over the holidays. People...

Need to stop students killing R4's

On the contrary, I would say.... A lot of wear and replacement parts simply wouldn't be in production if it wasn't for the trophy every year. A good example is the de Carbon shocks, another is driveshafts, the the list goes on- A solid market for spares, bought by people like youing engineering...

    Can anyone identify this part?

I seem to recall 4CVs had kingpins and grease lube, so not that. Also pretty sure the same with dauphine. It may be from an estafette????

    Carburettor repair issue

You could try Loctite 290 Wick-in. It is commonly used for porosity in cylinder blocks and heads as a treatment on new thin wall engine castings by the car manufacturers. With a clean dry casting off the engine apply the loctite- it will get sucked into porous castings due to the surface...

what's the secret to a good joke?

Another thing is if you have no other way of determining you are at correct TDC or 180 degrees out is unscrew the no 1 spark plug and put your finger over the hole while the engine (with ignition off) being turned over by hand. You'll feel the compression/air coming out as it comes up to TDC...

More parts for the cold months

Nice pile of bits! I see you got Michelin 145/80 x 13 tyres- are they still listed by Michelin in their catalogue there? I can't seem to find them in their online one.

Heated rear window fails to work

I recommend the conductive silver paint- we used to use it in our lab at work and I was allowed to borrow it occasionally- fixed the heated screens on a Renault 16 and a Peugeot 505- no problem!

    Worn out driveshafts?

One thing that can happen is that either the outer OR the inner joints run out of grease/thick renault oil because a lot of it has either leaked out through a hole in the boot or because the worm drive clips (on the inners) are loose or just not seating properly. As the existing grease gets hot...

    R4 questions ... from Australia ...

I think a good early R4 is probably worth more in Australia, if anything. But the market of buyers will be a lot smaller.

Renault 4 Super. 1962. The Clean Up.

The black numbers are paint code 412 (Ile de France blue) and I believe upholstery (S1 is a woven cloth salt and pepper with maybe a faint blue tinge to it according to my somewhat faded manual))

    New Carbs

Oh! Then what is the thing on the side of the float chamber? I thought it was an accel pump... but maybe this isn't a 28 IBS at all, althouigh that is what they say it is. Or is it a later version fitted on something like an Extra? NEW carb CARBURETOR fit RENAULT R4 GTL 11779001 1961-1992 R4 4L...

    New Carbs

I notice someone on Ebay is selling a batch of new old stock (I assume) Solex 28 IBS carbs. They look interesting/tempting to me because they have an accelerator pump and might give the R4 a ltittle bit more get-up-an-go than the usual zenith 28 IF. Anyone have any thoughts on: experience with...

    Feeling Dim!

On the Mk2 the RH is indicators, on the LH side the small switch is master lights on/off, large LH stalk has 3 positions: low is sidelights, middle dip beam, high is main beams. Push the LH stalk in axially for horn. Dipping is manually move the big LH lever up and down. Some countries had (I...

    Window catches failing

    1. Try rearview mirror glue from Halfords etc, the type that has a little phial of hydroflouric acid to etch the areas you are going to glue before you actually glue it. 2. If that doesn't work use the 5 minute araldite- the optically clear one is best (I think) so you won't notice any glue so...

    Renault 4L van

Why not just drive an R4 van through the front of the Tate modern- it can be a happening and an installation at the same time. And if Tracey Emin is there too- bonus!

No petrol delivery, pump failure or rust blockage?

I would disconnect the hose to the carb float bowl inlet, and with that or a similar tube and a small funnel, or a handy syringe, squirt some petrol into the float bowl before trying anything. Ideally I would also take the air filter top cover off and squirt an aerosol off "Aerostart" (or...
