    Tyre load index

I've never noticed the loading rating on tyres. 75 is good to 1500kg. The max loaded (gross) weight for my R4 F4 is 1165kg. I favour 145/80/13 and mine all have Uniroyal.

    High idle when hot

Choke cable not set right would be my guess - I recall a similar issue. It's not intuitive to set. There is a lever that increases throttle in the choke and well recommended to make sure there is some slack in the choke before that starts operating. Same for throttle cable - just a little...

    Radiator rescue

The plastic gets brittle. Normally they fail where the core clamps on to the plastic sides for the same reason. If it's the original it would be better to buy another one.

Renault 4 Hub Caps Advice Required

Yours look like tgey are from a 2CV. They fall off when you try to fit them to a R4. Not enough dish.

F6 Van, brake pedal push rod

You should feel when the rod contacts the master cylinder. When it goes from free travel to acting against something. Normally the free bit will be 5 or 10mm pedal travel.

F6 Van, brake pedal push rod

The rear needs to be on the ground for bleeding because of the proportioning valve that limits the rear brakes. Or sit the rear drums on a block of wood. Bleeding statring furthest from the master cylinder should work with the Eezybleed.

Pulling the engine from a Renault 4GTL

You can remove the engine by lifting the gearbox and putting a plank of wood between the gearbox and front crossmember and push it back under the engine sump. Then 2 people can lift and slide the engine and box over the crossmember and slide it down the plank to the ground It goes back the...

About to get my first Renault 4, asking for advice!

My 73 had a black dashboard. Maybe it was late 73.

    Handbrake adjustment

If you have the Bendix rear brakes they should be self adjusting, but the Girling ones are manual adjust and seem to need doing every year. A Haynes manual would be useful for instructions. The adjustment in the handbrake cable is for cable stretch and can be done after you make sure the...

    Hello!

You might be able to unseize the fork with the gearbox in place. Takes heat and plenty of penetrating fluid.

About to get my first Renault 4, asking for advice!

The early 4 speed had a starter handle hole too. The bonnet on the car is shaped to fit the later front crossmember which was fitted to accommodate the extra length of the 4 speed. That one should be '68 to '73 with an 850cc engine, 4 speed dogleg first gearbox, and nice seats. They are...

Engine overheating and rusty water pump

Just a thought - have you properly bled the coolant system? Hold expansion bottle above engine, open heater bleed, squeeze pipes to rad to move air, mske sure radiator is full.

    Homegrown Garage Green One -75

I didn't know about the mil. Why is it 10km and not 1000km? But I am easily confused. I set my sat nav to read in metric because I got confused by the alternative units. It used to say 'turn left in 1 mile', then a little later 'turn left in 800 yards', then 'turn left in 250 feet'. I...

    Fuel additive

The mixture screw is an idle mixture control screw but it does influence low speed running too. It's handy to have something we can twiddle to get past the MOT and then set it back how we like it. Set that for best driveability. Valves don't tend to get damaged during low speed running...

    Fuel additive

The lead replacement is different from the `octane rating. Petrol has zero lead these days. Also the R4 will run fine on the lowest grade of petrol. If you are just running the car around as normal there shouldn't be any need for an additive to replace lead. These cars have valve inserts...

Oil level - dip stick reading

The end of the dipstick sits in the sump so the reading on the dipstick should never be lower than the level in the sump. It might be picking up oil from the dipstick tube as you pull it up the first time. I think the second reading will be the more reliable.

    What’s this pipe?

It's a drain for the heater box in case water gets in from the flap below the windscreen.

    Tyres

A lot of us use 145/80 R13 tyres. Plenty of decent brands in that size.
