Any advice or tips on what I’ll need or the process at the border for bringing an unlicensed R4 into the UK

Most likely on the back of a trailer

Or is it quite straightforward

Thanks for any help in advance.

On the forum this line is many times written "Speak to Brian Whiteside at Renault classic car club about all aspects of importing a car. He knows all the wrinkles."

Most likely the R4 is on the back of a trailer and shipped by; plane, boat/ship, train or hovercraft ;)

it’s on the back of a trailer. Calais to Dover, what paperwork would I need at the border?

speak to Brian Whiteside to confirm, but I think you have a week to register the car with the tax authorities after arrival. He did our importation and it was completely painless. Did not feel a thing.

At importation, Have the Carte Gris with you , its the french registration document ( most important), and if the car is 40 years old or more, it may show that the vehicle has been registered as Vehicule de Collection, similar to our Historic Vehicle classification. Have a signed and dated bill of sale ( with your name on it ) most important and confirmation of amount paid, also important. But confirm with Brian for the latest, because ours was pre that event that continues to provide fun and joy, Brexit, and it will probably be more complex now that UK authorities are more involved.

It won't be more "complex" than in the old days when every import continued as normal.
I'm jealous of your Brexit and can't wait for our Nexit.
It cannot be the case that all those incompetent euro politicians with eu laws decide what will happen in our country and even worse that eu laws supersede national laws, the less I see that euranus star the better it is.

I think the NOVA rules have changed since I did mine and now the NOVA needs to be filled in by a specialist. Worth searching the government site for importing a car. Still no duty on an old car but the form needs filling in.

In my former employment, which ended in 2022, just after Brexit, we ran an unofficial "book" on which country would be the next to leave the E.U. Sweden was thought to be the most likely (non-adoption of the Euro, a certain independence of thought on many matters etc.) although I suspect the joy of saying "Sexit" every time the subject cropped up may have influenced things! As The Netherlands were one of the E.U.'s original members your nation's departure would be significant, were it to happen. Your current political ramifications suggest this outcome may be more likely.....

This comment is not to be seen as a pro or anti Brexit remark.

This may have been said already so apologies if I'm repeating.
I recently had to re import my 1983 4 gtl from Channel Islands after it had been previously imported from France to UK, then taken to Jersey, the long and winding road.... lol
Anyhow, after calls to DVLA and HMRC i was told i could sort the NOVA paperwork out myself but customs declaration would have to be done by a shipping agent as the software needed is far too expensive for one off personal use.
I used ShipMyCar, no duty as too old, just vat on the purchase costs plus their charge of £125 for customs clearance and NOVA application.
Then once it was here in UK ,( i had it bought in on a hired beavertail to my nans drive, so not driven in uk ) all I've had to do is apply for a V5 from DVLA cost £55 (unless like mine its allready been registered in uk, then its free) and fill in a V112 to exempt vehicle from being mot'd.
Having typed this it looks so simple but took me from Feb to now, she's still on my nans drive waiting for DVLA to post me my V5 to drive her home, biggest delays have been in uk, quelle suprise
all the best with your import journey, bottom line is at the end you have an amazing car to enjoy i hope

So-if Sweden is Sexit, would that make Finland Fixit ?

Also, and this is most important, don't be divvy like me and send a copy of the French registration document because you want to keep the original as your a touchingly sentimental young boobie.
Otherwise you'll get a lovely letter from DVLA rejecting your application and returning all your documentation so you have to start over

Yes, you have to send the original document. Take a colour photocopy of it for the records.
