Changing contact breakers without changing ignition timing?

Can I change the contact breakers without destroying the ignition timing? I have a femsa distributor. Can I open the two screws at the top switch the parts and just put them back in?

I do not know how to properly configure ignition timing, but a mechanic did that for me half a year ago, so it might be best just to leave it as it is, if possible.

Okay, I just did it, because if it did not work, someone would have to configure ignition timing anyway.

I just changed one half of the breaker, the part with the spring attached (the spring was broken - after just 6 months - is this normal?) and left the other half (where the contact-break distance can be changed) as it was.

The car is now running again and *seems* to run quite fine. But of course I am not sure whether everything is still configured correctly.

What happens to the car when the ignition is configured slightly incorrectly? Do you think I should have someone reconfigure the ignition?

Thank you.
