Are the clutches all the same on the 4 or do they vary between engine sizes. Fifi has developed a bit of a judder and as the clutch has always been problematic I have decided to bite the bullet and fit a new one.

No, they are not all the same. Will you be sourcing one in the uk or in France? If it's the former I can try and help with part numbers, if it's the latter then I'm sure you know about the oval plate numbers etc.

There are three basic clutch types, one for 3-speed cars with the "deep" flywheel and spring-and-rockers pressure plate, the second for the 4-speed small engined cars (flat flywheel, diaphragm type pressure plate). Both of these are of 160mm diameter. The third type is for the 5 bearing engines (956 and 1108 cc), and uses a disc of 180mm diameter. So its very easy to recognise which type fits on your R4.

Thanks to both of you, I will be sourcing one here in France from Mr Auto, mine is the 956 engine of 88 vintage so the latter one seems to be it.
