Confusion of R's

This may be a little elementary of a question but I really need to gain an understanding of the different R's running around in people's conversations. I am also having a little doubt as to what model my Renault is.

About a year abnd a half ago I sent all the serial numbers and such to George Thomson at Whitehouse and he informed me that I owned a 1973 Renault 4 (R1123 800-01). However, whenever I see a list of R4's there is a few other letters usually following (RT, etc.). Is there a way for me to know exactly what kind of car I have?

This has also caused a bit of a problem in my obtaining of parts. While I have received many correct parts, I also have a bag full fo parts that were supposed to work on my engine, according to books, but just didn't fit.

Will someone please clear up my confusion a little?

Nick

I'm not sure any other letters are of much use. The factory had several suppliers of parts for things like ignition and brakes so if one supplier ran into trouble the production line wouldn't stop.

There are 3 or 4 different types of distributor that could be fitted to a car, and 2 types of brakes. Best option is to figure out what you've got and ask for parts for that make of distrubutor or brake for the car you have.

With your model, the key is the R1123 code and any other details listed on the ovalplate, likely a three digit equipment/country code and like a seven digit fabrication number which is he serial number of the car in the R1123 range commencing at zero. These can help in pinpointing the right parts.

However given the mists of time, various parts of your car could have been replaced with other bits, or the parts documentation can get confused suggesting a new part number which isn't exactly correct. When I tried ordering the old style aluminium sliced bread loaf shaped grille, George's predecessor Fergus said that the suggested replacement grille was the grey plastic one from a GTL.......

I ran into a similar hick-up with my R4F4 van. On the 845cc model, the radiator has a shroud for the fan. Somehow, over time, this thing has gained an inch and a half on either side of the radiator. I've made it fit with the help of 2 diy brackets. If It smells I know the exhaust is touching the shroud.

We have r1126 lhd - and would love to know what cc it is but have no idea how to find out. Anyone know?

R1123 is the 845cc model. I think the R numbers related mostly to engine size, and all the 845cc cars were R1123.
