Exhaust pipe bracket

My GTL has developed a nasty exhaust rattle which is because the exhaust pipe is rubbing on the inner wing where it passes above the nearside front wheel.

Although the hole in the wing is plenty big enough, the exhaust pipe has dropped, causing it to rest on the wing.

Looking underneath the car, I noticed that the first exhaust bracket is broken. It appears to be rubber (?) [see photos].

My question is, should I replace it with a 'rubber' bracket (which would allow some movement), or can I get away with using a metal bolt?

Anyone got a spare rubber bracket?!

Any thoughts appreciated! Thanks

You're best replacing like for like, you can get the part from any motor factor for pennies.

Steve, you're spot on! It would appear that the pipe has dropped a bit, causing it to rub as it passes through the inner wing. It has occurred since coming back from the garage where they had fiddled with the exhaust manifold.

I've managed to loosen where the exhaust pipe manifold joins the manifold and move the exhaust pipe up. It now no longer rests on the inner wing. I think that the rubber mounting has been broken for a long time and it didn't cause a problem until the manifold end wasn't put back properly.

Unfortunately, the exhaust bracket in the picture still doesn't line up with the hole in the chassis, but I'll see how it goes with out the rubber mount for the moment.

Thanks for your great advice!

It's probably a pattern exhaust and not everything always lines up. I have been known to get a pair of grips and bend the bracket until the holes line up. Or you can always drill another hole - it's best that the mounting is fitted as it will drop again in time.

might also be worth checking gearbox mounting hasnt started to fail as also makes funny noises and will cause exhaust problems as well

ps not so common but worth checking is people have been known to leave out support bracket under manifold whils changing starter motor causing ns engine mounting to crack and cause clutch probs as well as dropping exhaust onto inner wing
