A must, especially, for long/high speed journies when using 'sans plomb' (unleaded/lead-free) petrol in your R4. I paid £9.99 for a 250 ml bottle which will treat 250 litres of fuel - a very inexpensive precaution when you consider the cost/hassle of an expensive garage bill to rectify burnt out/damaged valves/seats.
It's a user friendly bottle with a very accurate/calibrated dispenser to add the correct amount into your tank when you fill up - easy to follow instructions are on the label and it's readily available. ;)

Bonjour Le Champ, just a puzzling part of your post...."longer high speed journey"!!!!! you must have straighter roads where you are, although I did see 100 kph the other day, would that count? it wasn't for long as I was scared and the windows kept closing themselves, I had to use the front vent as an air brake to bring sanity back to Fifi.

I use it all the time in my Morris Oxford MO, but haven't used it in the Renault 4 yet.

Lean It but Don't Lose It

Bonsoir Kev, You are clearly missing out on the terror induced adrenalin rush all other 4 user's take for granted :( - You really must strive to overcome your inconvenient tendency to be overwhelmed by terror/thoughts of self preservation ;). A cursory look at our John Doe's recent pix amply demonstrate the cornering/lean parameters of our humble gallic loooooong reach suspension  Grip that steering wheel real tight, hunker down low, revs 4500 constant, gear'n steer - now go for it! - Geronimooooooooooo.:p:p
I've put together a little helpful list of inconsequential bits/baubles/baggage to dump and increase velocity:  ashtray, int light, passenger w/blade/seat inc belt and door fittings, rear seats, all mats, bumpers/ love handles, jack inc handle, spare wheel/ hubcaps and valve caps.

BTW Confuse the rural locals - wear a beret and drive it like a Frenchman. Add a few hens or a straw bale in the back for authenticity - Voila!

Well, my heads to big for a beret although the dustbin lid looks rather dashing, my wife objects to sitting on the floor or being thrown out in the need for speed. Driving like a Frenchman comes easily enough as Fifi tends to hog the middle of the road naturally, must sort out the steering. Tried to find Chateauneuf sur tin on the map and couldn't so either I'm not looking in the right place or maybe sur tin is a reference to the metal used for construction, which one is it?

You'd want to translate Chateauneuf sur tin into English (apart from the tin bit) then it's close :D

I don't think the 850s need fuel additive. Only the 956 and 1108cc family of engines, and then only really on motorway journeys.

Ah, just got the Chateauneuf reference!!

What additive do you use Malcolm?

I buy random stuff from the petrol station before a long trip for the GTL. It's rare that I ever do long motorway trips, but 1000 miles on the motorway at top speed does cause valve recession on the GTL. For normal driving around I don't bother with the stuff.

Well, I will agree with Malcolm, as we have discussed here earlier, the 850 head is totally compatible with unleaded, I have done about 80.000 kms, plus some other R4s I'm servicing, and there is absolutely no sign of valve seat recession.

Vive Le Castrol

Drat! I'll have to sell on the 1,000's of Castrol/Halfords/Charlie Brown shares I've just bought :(.
