Hi, does anyone have a headlamp for sale?
My 85 R4 GTL has failed its MOT and i am struggling to find a replacement that satifies the MOT man. I bought one from Der Franzose, but it does not project the correct beam, just a ball of light. I have then bought one from Melun Retro Passion, but only to find that it is exactly the same. Renault uk do not have any in stock. Any help / advice greatly received.
Thanks.

Hello
I have bought two new headlamps for My '84 GTL and now wondering if they will do the same. As a suggestion try altering the position of the bulb (inwards and outwards) to focus the beam. You may have to cobble something up to fix the bulb in the resultant position?

Is the MOT man worried by the ball of light or is it something else like the reflector corroded that he dislikes?

Not very helpful, but maybe try another MOT man... I think he is being a little too picky.

It isn't that they are LHD headlamps? Change them to RHD like this: http://www.renault4.co.uk/tech-headlamp-conversion.htm and set them slightly low. I guess you have the correct bulb (locates in the slot etc?)

Beam pattern is poor in the cheaper headlamps. I have a set on my car. Though I don't have problems with the MOT.

Well Malcolm you were spot on, the headlamps were set up for LHD. The old saying goes - if you want a job done properly, do it yourself! Which of course I didn't do.
I gave the garage, who were carrying out welding and other repairs, print outs of your headlamp conversion guide, but they cut the slot in the wrong position, 10mm out. I guess this was enough to give a false reading. It was only after it failed again after I supplied them with a second hand item (from Derek of Renospeed - thanks Derek) that I realised there was another issue. So I went to the garage and upon closer inspection realised that the sliding tab on each headlight holder was set for LHD. With this corrected, it passed.
So I never used the headlamp from Der Franzose or Melun Retro Passion, but I suspect that if they were correctly set up for RHD, they would be ok.

if anyone wants them I have a pair of 'lamp convertors' which used to fit on the headlamp shell and allowed you to rotate the lamp so as to conform to rhd legislation, not sure when or why they stopped fitting them.
