Looking To Buy My First Ren 4

Hi, this is my first post so hello.... Last week I wrote off my Renault Megane on the central reservation of M27. I have decided to try and buy something small, cheap to run, I lost my no claims bonus as well as being only third party insured..(tried to save pennies.... Big mistake...Huge!)...Anyhow, I have a freind who had a renault 4, I went in it a couple of times and loved, tho I have never driven one. I have been thinking about a Citroen 2CV but I like the shape of the renault more. So I was wondering where a good place to start looking for something would be other then here. I am no good with restoration projects and I have a young granddaughter that I take out now and again, so I need something reliable, with a little MOT on it if poss. I have seen a couple on here, but my budget isn't huge. There is a blue one in Kent on e-bay at the moment, I asked the guy if it was drivable, he told me to refer to the listing, but the listing doesn't say.....besides it's a long way for me to go if it doesn't drive as I am in Southampton. I don't mind travelling a bit for the right car. Sorry if I've drivelled on a bit

http://www.renault4.co.uk/guides.htm has some info on where to find them and what to look for.

There's a red one on eBay with an MOT at the moment as well. Not that an MOT means much - mine has one! They aren't really cheap cars any more. Insurance and running costs are next to nothing, but you'd be looking over a grand ideally for something worth having. Unless you have a welder - then you can pick up cheap ones and weld them back together yourself.

Thanks Clementine.... I had a good read of your pages, I am a little worried about buying one off e-bay now as I would like to thoroughly check for the rusty points you mentioned.... my lucky friend bought his from a lady that had kept it in a garage for years for £350.... in excellant condition... but he was very lucky, I know I am looking at quite a bit more then that.... I thinkI will have to plod through the free-ads and internet. Brilliant website:)

You can still go to see the ones on eBay. The sellers tend to do 10 day ads that run over 2 weekends, and let you see the car if you mail them.

Hi Jenxy, welcome to the forum. I know I shouldn't be saying this here (Clementine knows where I live), but if you did decide to go for a 2cv instead I know a specialist just up the road from you in Romsey who would probably be able to sort you out with a reasonable one (as with an R4, you'd probably be looking at about a grand for something worth bothering with unless you're keen on DIY). I've had 2cvs and R4s other the years, and am still unable to decide which I prefer so currently own both (although like you, I think I prefer the styling of the R4). If you're a novice to funny old French cars you would find the 2cv more of a culture shock after your Megane - the design is a lot older, so it needs more frequent maintenance and is less conventional to drive (apart from the position of the gearstick an R4 is totally conventional to drive). The R4 also feels less flimsy than the 2cv, and far more like a proper car. Good luck with your search.

Thanks for all the replies... I have been busy scouring all the places suggested, but it is true that my budget will only get me something that is going to need a good bit of work, I think I will have to keep looking and hope to come across something. I can still look at all the shiny examples and drool a bit....:)
