One silencer or two?

MY exhaust on BB is a single silencer system and has lost all of its baffles in the back box so I'm going to look out for a replacement, the car runs an 1108cc engine with a Solex 32.

Would you run the twin silencer system or the single silencer system?

Does having the two silencers make a noticeable difference to either the performance or the noise?

I do like my cars to run quiet, (must be getting old as back in the good old days I preferred them noisier the better).

Whats everyone else running on their cars and how have they found the quality of the replacement systems?

Any help would be appreciated

regards

Pepper

Just the single back box on our 1108cc GTL. It is a genuine Renault part. I don't find it too noisy, but don't have another 4 to compare it with. It would be interesting to hear what difference two silencers would make, and how much power/efficiency is lost.

Enjoy your weekend!

Hi pepper! I would def go for one silencer as their Only job is to get noise-levels under G.mnt requirements (is that 86Db/A in the Uk ?)
-I would also go for the most 'Open' one I could find as they restict power less and if you mount it at rear you won't be bothered by much exhaust-noise..
being into Hi-fi I am maybe more than usual concious of noise,so
am using a set of in-ear plugs for shooting-They Only take away sharp (steep-rise level)noises so you don't get that Cotton-wool-feel in the head!) Normal conversation(*) is still possible, but the buzz when you arrive after 5hours of R4-racing is gone..
Only thing I have seen the past few years is that Bosal (Belgium?) have had real rust-problems on lots of their exhausts... Due to cheap recycled sheet-metal??

(*) wife would say I am hardly capable of Any Normal conversation..... -R.

The Bosal exhausts are probably bad but nowhere near as bad as Walkers reputation over here in the UK. I've seen a Walkers exhaust rust out in 12 months! As for their aftermarket catalytic convertors they are a joke!

I cut a couple apart a couple of years ago - different aftermarket exhausts are quite different inside. See http://www.renault4.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=1523

I felt modifying a rear fit Bosal silencer helped a tiny bit with the 32mm carb, but the difference wasn't enough to be certain. Possibly a system with a slightly larger pipe diameter would have helped more.

Ermintrude currently sports a standard Bosal system. Might have sounded a little noisy as I have a big gap at the base of the boot lid that lets exhaust noise in, but tailpipe noise isn't a major noise source when the rear seat is in place.

Sorry guys I think there is no R4 having two silencers. All have one, either under the front wing, or (GTL) on the rear.

After many years and kilometers driving 850s with underwing silencers, I felt great difference the last month that I am driving the Jogging. I was able to talk normally with my passenger while driving at 110 km/h... I can also feel the left hand glove compartment being heated much less (you 850 RHD drivers are very lucky on this :-) ).

Both the 850 and the 1100 silencers must be quite restrictive...but I would not touch them, the distinctive R4 engine note should not be spoiled in my opinion!

pepper! just found a TRIFLOW (CR 2774 C2 91) exhaust for Renault4
this is The most impressive build-quality I've seen!
Am unsure Which 4 it fits? -as it has innerDiam.35mm. and is in one piece
that is All the way From underwing-silencer To side-outlet.
HeftyProper brackets not flimsy tabs spotwelded on..
metal is 1,6mm.thick and it looks rolled not crimped into shape..
-This guy at the garage had a cleaning out He threw away 100d's
(two large Scania semis)of older unused exhausts
This one was what I could identify and save!
Anyone knows Triflow? American weren't they?Anyone sitting on old cataloge who can identify Which 4 it's for? -R.
