It ought to be an R1123.

thanks Malcolm...Im having biggy problems getting hand brake cables and a few other bits.....my oval plate fell off and the result is renault have designated my r4 as a renault 12 estate!!!!!!!!!.....eeeeek yours with thanks steve

The VIN numbers for both our R4s begin VF1 then the next 4 digits are the oval plate number - in our case VF1239B... and VF1112C... I must point out though that our cars are French from 1989/90.

Such old R4s do not have VF1.... serial numbers. This is the 17-digit VIN number, mandatory after 1980 (?).

So your oval plate should read R1123 then 43 600 (assuming it is an UK import) then a number between 1239157 and 1357386 (1973 model year).
