Piston Arrangement

Evening All.

I'm a bit confused with the manual on piston direction arrangement and would appreciate some guidance. my R4 is 845cc. Pistons 1 and 2 have the arrow facing the bulkhead, whilst pistons 3 and 4 are facing the gearbox.

The Haynes manual is very vague as to the direction in which they are to be installed and could really do with some advice here.

Pistons 3 and 4 have been assembled incorrectly, arrow should be pointing towards flywheel on all cylinders. Cylinder numbering starts from flywheel end on these engines.
Connecting rod should also be fitted in relation to pistons in such a way that cap is towards camshaft (big ends are slant on these engines in order to allow the connecting rod to pass through liner).
Were the pistons any noisy before you took the head off?
