Hi
An engine hoist is the best method. I hire one for the weekend which works out cheaper than during the week. However, if you remove the bonnet, drop all the suspension, unbolt the gearbox and remove it, unbolt everything which would prevent the engine from lifting away from the engine bay including the engine mounts, lower the car to the lowest notch on your axle stands, place a block of wood between the underside of the engine and trolley jack, jack up the engine until the engine mount studs have clearance, then pull the engine towards the front crossmember using the jack and then rest it on the crossmember. You can then lift the engine out. This is a two person job and a bit precarious as the engine could quite easily topple over (health and safety) and not for those with back problems or who do not want to risk having back problems or crushing their feet. I have done this before in my youth but would rather pay for the hire of a hoist these days and avoid risk of injury.
