R4 Steering rack needed desperately!

Hello Folks, I wonder if anyone here might be able to help locate a steering rack for my friends adored R4? She loves it to pieces but it has been languishing for months in a Wiltshire garage because no one seems to know where to find one. I've approached some friends that own a Renault garage in Dover but they've struck out too. Could anyone please throw us a lifeline?
Thank you ever so much
best wishes

Before replacing the rack : if it is simply that it feels "notchy" when the steering wheel is turned, it means that the rack needs lubricating. Remove the little cover above the rack/pinion interface (held on by two 10mm hex bolts), remove the spring, washer and plug, then pack in grease until bored. Ensure that when you reassemble, the steering wheel alignment is right (i.e. don't move the wheel at all until you've greased and reassembled).

If it is perished rubber steering rack boots, these can be purchased new (try Lifestyle Renault in Tunbridge Wells).

It really does depend on the model and year of the car though. Hopefully the OP will get back to us with that information.

I had the same problem last year.

Derek in Renospeed sorted it out for me
Best of luck

Steering rack

I rebuilt mine recently using the bush kit available on eBay - it cost 6 euros and a bit of grease and was easy to do (this was a mid 70's rack)
