Removing complete Heater

Hi all and Merry Christmas, to remove the heater system do i need to remove the dash to get access, my Haynes manual makes no mention of the heating system? as the 'y' shaped vents don't seem to want come pass the dash panel? also should this R4L 1984 have a thermostat fitted in the top hose? Many thanks

Hi Sooty

The dash does not need to come out. Even though it can be a bit tricky, if you angle the heater motor console at the right angle with the directional airflow flaps flatback, it is possible to slide it out (if everything has been disconnected). There should be a thermostat fitted to the top radiator hose.

Best Wishes for Christmas and the New Year.

Yes you must remove the dashboard, but should not be too hard on this car.
The latest heater can only be removed as a complete unit, after disconnecting the hoses at engine bay.
All R4s were fitted with a thermostat :-)

I tried both ways and it is to much hassle to take heater box out and in if dash board is on.
It takes not more than 15 minutes to remove steering wheel and dashboard.
And then is much much easier to remove heater box.
That is my recomendation.
