Hi I have a 1980s quatrelle, she will pass her french MOT if I can adjust/tighten the front right wheel bearings.
I have tried to undo the central nut on the spindle. The problem is the nut turns both ways but does'nt undo or tighten?????? Very strange any advice will be gratefully received.
HELP.......................

Sounds very like the thread is stripped, might be an idea to put pressure on the back of the nut as you try to undo it.

As Stan says try and put some pressure on the back of the nut while you undo it.
Adjusting or tightening the bearing is not possible you can try to fill them up with thick grease just for the MOT. But I think its better to replace them.

Will give that a go Ta very much, if she gets sorted two more years of fun driving

The "central nut on the spindle" is presumably the retaining nut on the driveshaft.

If this nut is stripped there is a (theoretical) possibility of the driveshaft coming adrift while driving. It would also lead to play/wobble which might be mistaken for a worn wheel bearing.

Are you sure this is not the problem? It sounds as if you may need to replace the driveshaft as well, or at least its nut for one which holds it tightly.

Wheel bearings themselves can't be serviced. You remove them using a press or puller. A new set only costs a few quid (Euros).

OH NOW THAT SOUNDS BAD ..............................OK thought about it ,,,,it still sounds bad at the moment the nut will not come off or tighten so I will need a mechanic as I am only a diy jobber with limitations.. thanks for the advice though benchseat.

I have also realised whats cheap in the UK does not really equate to cheap in France, I was quoted a thousand euros for a replacement carb.....not even a brand new one???
