Renault 4 Restoration

Hello everybody,

I'm a 16 year old boy from Antwerp, Belgium. I had the oppurtunity to buy a Renault 4 Gtl 1984 for a little price. Now i was thinking of restorate it myself. Since i don't have much technical expierience i would like to ask you guys for a little help. How do i start a restoration project ? my engine doesn't start. when i turn the key the car shocks a litte forward and when i turn it back again it shocks a litte backwards.

Hello Maxim, congratulations on buying your car, I hope it gives you a lot of pleasure!

Before you even start your car, did you check for water(anti-freeze) in the radiator, and also your oil levels? It sounds like you're starting the car in gear., you might have a clutch problem........ Best to start it in neutral!

But at this stage, my advice to you is to spend 2 days cleaning the engine.
Then take off the rocker arm cover on top of the engine, and scrape out all the old oil. If your car has been standing for a long time then the oil is probably like glue.

Drain the old oil out from the sump under the car and put in new oil. 20W50 about 3 liters.
