Hi, I've bought a Renault 6 tl . It's a tidy low mileage car. I need advice and info. Is electronic ignition worthwhile ? the rubber doughnut the steering column/steere r box is cracking up. How do I replace it . Will a new rubber grommet in the gear selector reduce slop in the gear selection..

Well done you! An R6 is just a posh R4 so you’ll find all the info you need here on this forum. Electronic ignition is highly recommended - the more expensive the better. The gearshift is naturally sloppy but there were posts on here recently about reducing the sloppiness in the rubber bush - the search function works well on this forum.

Congratulations on getting an R6!
There's a guide to replacing the rubber doughnut here:
And you can get a new doughnut here:

You can get the gear lever kits here:

If the distributor is in good condition, and the points, condenser, rotor arm and cap are new (good quality parts only...), the car should run well - obviously, the timing has to be set correctly. As Gordon says, electronic ignition does make a difference, but it's by no means essential as long as the whole of the ignition system is in good shape.
Good luck with the car!

The electronic ignition kits are a "fit and forget" item; once installed, there's no need to go near them again. However, if you enjoy tinkering, playing around with points and condensers, together with measuring dwell angles then stick with the old method! As has been said, properly set up points, with a clean distributor cap and good plugs are as good as an electronic system.
