Replacing an engine

Hi Clementine. Love your site. I'm hoping someone can advise me on this.

I have a 1991 LHD R4 GTL 1108cc and a 1986 RHD R5 TC 956cc. Will a 1397cc 70 bhp engine from a 1989 RHD Volvo 340 DL 5sp fit in either of the above cars? The body of the Volvo is in poor condition but the engine is excellent.

Many thanks, Simon.

no chance the only volvo lump thats actually shares ren features is the PRV V6 and the 1.7 F types.

There was some discussion on 1.4 engines in http://www.renault4.co.uk/forum/about76.html and something about later Renault engines in http://www.renault4.co.uk/forum/about36.html.

The problem with the late Renault engines is the camshaft sticks out of the wrong end. You'll be looking at replacing a lot of bits - ancillaries, induction, exhaust at the least. There are some bits that would need to be ground from the engine block and I''m not sure what crank and clutch differences there may be.

Sounds like a hassle even if it is possible. It's probably easier to find Renault 5 MK1 engine that will drop fairly well straight in.
