Just taken the cylinder head off an 82 GTL.The rocker shaft and springs were completely caked in solidified oil but after much scrubbing things look alot better. On the inside of the rocker cover there is an additional plate with a gap between it and the cover. This is filled with something and I am not sure if it is more solidified oil or some other substance that is meant to be there. Any advice would be appreciated.

I should imagine that it's more gunge. This plate should have a gap as it enables the engine to breathe through the breather outlet at the top - the one that is connected to the carb by a rubber pipe. Try blowing down the pipe to see if it's blocked as well.

Jahu! -try using a string or something bendable to dig out the sludge between the two surfaces.Best is to wash the whole cover in degreaser but be SURE to wash ALL the degreaser out before installing again. If rubberseal keeps in place let it be there as it might have become soft and a little 'larger'so can be tricky to press into place afterwards! -R.
