Spare wheel: which way up!?

Having just painted our rusty spare wheel, I am wondering which way up I should put it back on the car. Shiny (painted) outside of wheel facing downwards exposes it to stones etc, but shiny side facing upwards means that water settles on the painted surface.

What do you do?

Shiny - or our our case rusty - side down. That way I can check the tyre pressure without having to remove it.

Good point about being able to check the tyre pressure Claude, hadn't thought of that
