Thermostat on an 850

The heater on our 850 is pathetically cool, especially coming home in yesterday mornings snow storm, tried flushing out the heater this pm, not any noticeable improvement, but squeezing the top hose there did not appear to be any thermostat - is this where it lives?

Opposite problem with the GTL - it is lovely and warm, but there is a small puddle appearing under the heater and the water is disappearing out of the expansion bottle - I suspect the heater matrix has sprung a leak - how much of a pain are they to get out, and are they any different on 850's and 1108's.

hi paulandpat
no ready supply of pictures i am afraid malcolm does all those

thermostat is supposed to live in top hose held by a second hose clip on engine end
they used to do 83 or 88 degree versions probably pot luck these days depending on supplier
without it in heater will be pretty poor as in cold weather engine will be overcooled by engine radiator

as to the gtl matrix see my post from a few days ago
it would apeear ther are 2 types of matrix( changing on facelifting of dashboard 82-83
matt guez F6 van is still in bits in my workshop as i type awaiting matrix from renault france about £40 +vat
once dash top is removed and collom plastic cover is removed it is not too bad a job

i would take some pics but working away tuesday

paul

Thanks Mr Reno - local factors supplied thermostat - hopefully that will solve one problem.
The matrix can wait (tiling kitchen floor a bit higher up the list at the moment :)) - but I think we shall be searching the local scrapper - I take it they are those unrepairable ally things?

The later GTL ones are aluminum/plastic and they (probably) cannot be repaired. One frequent source of leakage is the water valve, and these can be repaired reliably.

have just finished fixing Matt (MGUEZ) f6 van
ally/plastic matrix came via local renault dealers
7701026281 about £45 he thinks as bought some other bits as well
heater valves are expensive apparently seemed ok on his van (how do you repair them angel looked sealed unit to me ?)

bit fiddly but got there in the end as plastic air ducting guide had come apart from dash board (fixed with hot glue gun)

is it me or are those wires going to fan motor a pain as they kept touching fan blades making nasty noises (also fixed with hot glue gun )

have fun paul

Paul, there are two parts onthe valve, the body and the rotating valve. The valve is held in place by a very small grub screw fitted to slide in the body groove.
If you remove this screw (if you manage to...) you can separate the two parts of the valve. Water-tightness is achieved by an o-ring (you must replace this). As the valve is brass there is little surface oxidation that takes place and it should clean easily.
Now the little screw...it is usually rusted in place and if no penetrating oli helps free it, it should be cut off so that the two parts can be separated, then either drilled out, hole tapped and a new one fitted (tricky) or drill a new hole on the opposite side and fit either a screw or a roll pin.

P.S. We must be a very specialised forum to suggest repair methods for the heater valve... :-)

thanks angel ,
its just nice to share hard earned knowledge with fellow fans

in todays throwaway world people keep on about recycling, so we should all be fixing stuff not buying new :)

radweld may work but had little sucess on heaters in general may block it up

once the weather warms up if it is leaking badly the two pipes could be joined bypassing heater
