Water pump issues

Hi guys, I'm new to the site as only bought my 1982 Renault a few months ago. Decided to treat him to a service and after flushing what seemed like 40 years of crap from the radiator I found a leak! It's in the radiator pump. So I dismantled it as it's a new one to me and I'd like some advice please guys on what the hole is for and why would it be leaking? Thinking I may need a new pump but I'm rather perplexed about it! Thank you Terri

The hole is there to let water out when the seal fails rather than let it into the bearing. A new pump should fix it.

Did anyone suggest where the best place to buy a new pump, mines packed up, has been standing since 2006 mins you

Melun and Franzose have them, in worst instance they can be overhauled if the casing and impeller isnt too corroded
